“I am very pleased with how big-brand sponsors are responding,” Parella continued. “For example, Avis recently came on board as our official rental car company.”
Former NASCAR Cup star Bill Elliott is an SVRA regular.
Fans and sponsors aren’t the only ones to discover the appeal of the integrated Speed Tour package. Beyond the VROC series, several champion professional racers have become regular entries in other SVRA classes, among them NASCAR Cup champion Bill Elliott, Truck Series ace Mike Skinner, and Le Mans 24 Hours overall winner Geoff Brabham.

Elliott and Skinner compete regularly in the SVRA Group 10 class, Elliott bringing his 2007 NASCAR Dodge and Skinner his 2004 Toyota Tundra.
Elliott’s Dodge dominated at Road Atlanta.
Elliott dominated Saturday’s Group 10 feature race as Skinner followed up his big win in the VROC Charity Pro-Am Presented by RACER Magazine by taking second place.

In third behind Elliott and Skinner was SVRA standout Sam LeComte in another NASCAR racer, a 2003 Monte Carlo. LeComte gave the Saturday VROC winner all he could handle as they settled runner-up honors on the final lap.
Brabham is all but unbeatable in Group 2 at the wheel of a 1971 FB chassis built by his late father’s company. Image by Dave Ferguson
As for Brabham, he has been a terror in Group 2 since 2015, driving Ron Hornig’s 1971 Brabham BT35. He has amassed 14 victories, including two at SVRA’s annual Golden Bell Helmet U.S. Vintage National Championships at COTA.
“Something for everyone” includes Corvair lovers!
Parella’s Speed Tour will hit full stride in the coming months as another 11 racing weekends are on the schedule. The synergies of SVRA, Trans Am, and International GT will come to life at the top road racing courses in America, including Watkins Glen, Road America, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, and Portland.

The VROC series will present its final two rounds at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in August, and VIR in September.

Ol’ Yeller II races on at Barber Historics

Some people are just meant to have a famous car in their care. Some people are just wired to want to protect and share the history of a car that represents a snapshot in time.

Ernie Nagamatsu is one of those people.

Nagamatsu fell in love with Ol’ Yeller Mark II, one of the most famous of the Ol’ Yeller cars and one built by the ground-breaking husband and wife team of Max and Ina Balchowsky, long before he became its caretaker.

Ol’ Yeller II wasn’t just a typical race car — not even at the time of its creation at Hollywood Motors in 1959. It’s one of America’s most famous of cars, having been driven by the likes of Dan Gurney, Carroll Shelby (it’s said Shelby got the idea of a lightweight car with an American motor from driving Ol’ Yeller II after he was leading all the factory teams by 51 seconds in 1961 at Road America), Bob Bondurant, Billy Krause (the first Cobra driver for Shelby), Bobby Drake (the first Maserati Bird Cage driver) and others.

For the first time, Ol’ Yeller II will be making an appearance at Barber Motorsports Park as the Historic Sportscar Racing and the Historic Motor Sports Association are teaming up to present the 2019 Barber Historics this weekend.

“I used to sit down and have long discussions with Max about cars and racing over coffee that would last hours,” Nagamatsu said. “He gave me certain memorabilia from Ol’ Yeller II over the years, I collected other items and knew so much about the car when it became available for sale in the early 1990s.”

At the time it went on sale from a man in Oklahoma, it was out of the price range of the longtime Southern California dentist and artist. Balchowsky, however, made all the difference. After nearly two years of waiting and dropping the price, the car went to Nagamatsu so it could return home to Southern California and in the care of the Balchowsky’s engineering and Nagamatsu’s passion for preserving its history.

“The prior owner turned down a lot of offers before I could buy it,” Nagamatsu said. “I already had the race programs, invoices, a ton of photographs, magazines and so many other items that document its history. I just didn’t have the car.

“A lot of people will go to an auction, buy a car and then have to do the research on the car so they know who raced it, where it went and everything else. I knew everything about the car long before I was able to buy it.”

HMSA President Cris Vandagriff said it’s a very big deal that Ol’ Yeller will be making an appearance in Alabama this weekend.

“It says a lot about the event that Ernie is coming because he doesn’t go to just any event,” Vandagriff said. “He goes to really big events around the world. Ol’ Yeller is a special car and I think people in Alabama are going to say, ‘What the heck is that?’ Ernie is such a unique ambassador that he is going to blow people away.

“Thank goodness this special car has such a special individual as its caretaker.”

Vandagriff said Ol’ Yeller might be the most unique car to ever grace the grounds at Barber – a bold statement considering the type of events that have been showcased on site previously.

“We are extremely lucky to host Ol’ Yeller at the Barber Historics because Ol’ Yeller is the type of car that we want to showcase because it exposes the car and our sport to a new audience,” Vandagriff said. “I don’t think that a car as unique as this has ever run there before. There have been more modern cars, famous cars, Formula 1 cars, but they haven’t seen a home built special like Ol’ Yeller.

“This car was made from bits and pieces from other cars, made in a junkyard and it was going out and beating Ferraris. Very special drivers drove it and if that car wasn’t special, they wouldn’t have raced it as often and as long as they did. This car is from an important chapter in historic racing in North America. When racing started again after World War II, Southern California was the hub of motorsports and this was one of the great cars to come out of Southern California.”

Nagamatsu owns this famously unique car but he treats the relationship more like a museum and its curator than anything else.

“The car is the star,” he said. “We have the keys, but we just get to tag along.”

The Barber Historics is the only time this year that vintage cars will be allowed on the 17-turn, 2.38-mile road course. Nagamatsu has raced Ol’ Yeller II and shared it with crowds all over the world.

“We’ve been to England, New Zealand, Australia and all over the United States,” Nagamatsu said. “We’ve raced it all over and it means so much to share it with other people because it was innovative at the time and has a lot of stories.

“People from around the world tell me they made a model of the car. One guy showed me a slot car he made of it that he races. It was the underdog car and even today it is still one that people can relate to. It’s approachable. Goodwood is the Kentucky Derby for cars and people will come up and tap the car. It’s beat up and scruffy. They wouldn’t dare do that to a Ferrari, but they can to Ol’ Yeller.”

Tickets are available to the public for the Barber Historics both Saturday and Sunday. Click here for ticket information

NASCAR legend Bill Elliott scored his third straight Historic Sportscar Racing victory Friday in the Sasco Sports International/American Challenge race on the opening day of competition at the HSR Barber Historics at Barber Motorsports Park.

Driving the Vintage Race Car Restorations-prepared 1970 No. 9 Ford Mustang Boss 302, Elliott took the lead at the start of the seven-lap sprint race and raced straight to the overall and American-class victories.

The flag-to-flag run mirrored Elliott’s pair of Stock Car wins in last month’s 42nd HSR Mitty at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, where “Awesome Bill from Dawsonville” led every lap in both weekend races.

The Stock Car wins were earned in a 2006 No. 9 Dodge Charger but Elliott, a skilled road racer, was just as strong Friday at the wheel of the early Trans-Am era Mustang in his first visit to the 2.38-mile Barber road course.

Second overall in the Sasco Sports race and first in the Porsche class went to George Kovakas in his 1986 No. 114 Porsche 944 Turbo.

Gilles Boyer completed the overall podium and took second-place Porsche-class honors in his 1972 No. 37 Porsche 911 S/T prepared by Heritage Motorsports.

The Porsche podium was completed by Lucky Dog Racing driver Jerry Peters who raced to an impressive fourth-place overall finish in his 1974 No. 8 Porsche 914/6 GT.

Elliott was joined on the American-class podium by Chris Langley who scored class runner-up honors in his 1966 No. 99 Chevrolet Corvair Yenko Stinger.

The International-class victory went to Art Valentine in his quick 1974 No. 13 Datsun 260Z. Valentine led an all-Datsun podium sweep of the International division.

Dave Perelle finished second in class in the 1978 No. 89 Datsun 280Z and Greg Dietz was third in International in his 1979 No. 133 Datsun 280Z.

The first round of HSR WeatherTech Sprints starts Saturday at 12:20 p.m. CDT with a Formula Junior feature race following at 12:50 p.m. CDT. Saturday afternoon’s B.R.M. Chronographes Enduro Challenge Vintage and GT Classic (GTC) race is scheduled to start at 2:50 p.m. CDT.

Default Hakkinen to drive McLaren M8D/3 at Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Hakkinen to drive McLaren M8D/3 at Monterey Motorsports Reunion

20 years after earning his second consecutive Formula 1 drivers’ championship, Mika Hakkinen will take the wheel of the 1970 McLaren M8D/3 “Batmobile” at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion on August 15-18 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

American racing legend Dan Gurney and British F1 driver Peter Gethin each raced the “Batmobile” during the 1970 Can-Am season as teammates to Denny Hulme following the tragic loss of Bruce McLaren. Gurney drove it during the first three races of the season, winning twice from the pole position at Mosport and Mont-Tremblant. Gethin raced the car seven times, scoring a victory at Road America along with two other podiums. The car was used as a spare for Bruce McLaren Motor Racing drivers Peter Revson and Denny Hulme in 1971 and was in privateer hands from 1972 to 1974.

The vivid papaya-colored race car is powered by a 7.6-liter Chevrolet engine. The high strut-mounted rear wing of its predecessor — the M8B — had been banned by Can-Am, so the M8D’s rear wing was mounted low on fins, earning the car’s “Batmobile” nickname.

The McLaren team dominated the 1970 season with nine wins in the 10-round championship. McLaren drivers Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme and Peter Revson had won five straight Can-Am championships from 1967 to 1971.

This will mark the third consecutive year that Hakkinen, who had not previously driven at Laguna Seca, will make demonstration laps at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. He drove the 1974 McLaren M23 in 2017 and the 1995 McLaren F1 GTR in 2018.

“This track is fun, really enjoyable,” said Hakkinen. “The track goes up and down, and some of the corners have great camber. It looks tighter than it is from a distance, so you need a lot of guts to brake later and take the right line.”

Hakkinen will make spirited exhibition laps in the M8D/3 in the noon hour during the first three days of the four-day event. Click here for the full race schedule.

Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) today announced the top four contenders for its Vintage Race of Champions (VROC) Charity Pro-Am presented by Chopard Watch championship have filed entries for the next race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Mike Skinner and Max Papis won the A Production and B Production class races respectively at the first race of the season at Road Atlanta in March. Geoff Brabham and Willy T. Ribbs, who scored podium finishes at Road Atlanta, are also in the running for Chopard luxury watches that will be awarded to series champions at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) in September. The Brickyard Invitational has a new date for 2019, open to the public on August 3 & 4.

“The VROC presented by Chopard Watch is compelling competition, and is exceeding our expectations,” said SVRA CEO Tony Parella. “It’s exciting to see legendary drivers serious about vying for our championship.”

Skinner’s first taste of SVRA racing came at last September’s VIR Charity Pro-Am. In 1995 he delivered the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship for legendary team owner Richard Childress. Childress had noticed Skinner’s domination of the Caraway Speedway track championship as well as numerous other late model victories across the Carolinas the previous year and selected him to drive for his team in the inaugural season for NASCAR Trucks. Skinner rewarded Childress’ trust by scoring 16 victories for the black No. 3 Goodwrench Truck across two seasons.

Skinner has a career total of 28 race wins and 50 poles in NASCAR Truck competition. In 1997 Childress promoted him to join the great Dale Earnhardt Sr. as his teammate in the NASCAR Cup series. He again delivered by winning the 1997 Rookie of the Year title as well as six pole positions and a pair of exhibition race wins in Japan. In 2013 he was recognized for his accomplishments when he was inducted into the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame. Skinner, who races regularly with SVRA, has continued his career with occasional races as well as hosting the NASCAR Radio show, “Skinner Round-up” with his wife Angie on Sirius XM. Last year he drove his NASCAR Truck up the world-famous hill climb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Papis has driven in virtually every major series this side of drag racing. This includes Formula One, NASCAR, Indy car racing, Le Mans as well as V8 Supercars and IROC. The versatile driver competed in two Indianapolis 500s for 1998 race winner Eddie Cheever and won three Indy car races for Bobby Rahal’s team. In NASCAR he raced Sprint Cup, the Nationwide Series, and the Camping World Truck Series. He competed in seven 24 Hours of Le Mans contests, scoring a class podium in five of those events along with top-10 overall finishes on four occasions. Papis also won two 24 Hours of Daytona races – including an overall win in 2002. He has also started in more NASCAR races than any European driver in history.

Ribbs is the first black driver to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. He did so twice, in 1991 and again in 1993. He also tested for a Formula One seat, in 1986 with Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team. He was Trans Am’s most prolific winner from 1983 through 1985 when he scored 18 of his 19 career-total victories. He was series rookie-of-the-year in 1983, winning five times and more than any other driver. After Trans Am, he moved to Dan Gurney’s IMSA Toyota team for two years and picked off 10 race wins. Ribbs gained recognition as a rising talent when he won the Formula Ford championship in England in 1977. He was inducted into the San Jose Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.

Brabham was a master of sports car racing and the star driver of the dominant Nissan team that won four successive IMSA GTP championships from 1988 through 1991. During this time, he scored an amazing 27 overall victories. He also won the 1993 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 1989 and 1991 12 Hours of Sebring and the 1981 Can-Am series championship. Geoff’s outstanding career earned him six invitations to compete in the elite IROC series where he won two races. He began racing Formula Fords in Australia in 1973 and won the 1975 Australian Formula 2 championship and the 1979 Formula Super Vee championship before reaching the top levels of the sport. Geoff was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Australian Hall of Fame in 2018. Brabham is a 10-time starter in the Indianapolis 500, with a best finish of fourth in 1983. He was active in the Indy car series during the 1980’s recording eight podium finishes and 31 top tens.

The VROC Charity Pro-Am presented by Chopard Watch is a Saturday feature event at the Brickyard Invitational. The cars are 1963 to 1972 vintage Corvettes, Camaros, and Mustangs of SVRA “Group 6” A and B Production. The professionals will be paired with amateur drivers. Amateurs will start the race and be required to drive a maximum of seven laps.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Brickyard Invitational VROC Charity Pro-Am will benefit the Morgan Adams Foundation. The foundation supports laboratory and clinical research in the area of pediatric cancer, with an emphasis on tumors on the brain, spine, and central nervous system. Morgan Adams was a five-year-old girl who lost her battle with brain cancer in 1997. The foundation has a history of working with vintage racers to support their cause.

In addition to the Pro-Am, there will be a festival of other activities at the Brickyard Invitational including professional Trans Am by Pirelli series races on Saturday and Sunday. The weekend also presents the Hagerty Insurance “cars & caffeine” car corral, and 300+ vintage racers ranging over 100 years of automotive history racing in SVRA Groups 1 through 12.

Well known as one of the largest vintage racing gatherings in the United States, entries for the July 18-21 WeatherTech International Challenge with Brian Redman presented by HAWK have already surpassed 400 cars for races in 11 different groups subdivided into several sub-classes.

This year’s Road America-hosted feature is an MG Focus Event — entirely fitting since MGs have been a part of Road America since its inaugural weekend on Sept. 10-11, 1955.

The SCCA Chicago Region oversaw that weekend’s races — sanctioned as a National Championship event. There were two categories, Production and Modified, with several classes in each category. Three races were held on Saturday and four were held on Sunday. The first event at Road America on Sept. 10, 1955 was an eight-lap, 32-mile race for G Production cars (MGs). A field of TCs, TDs, and TFs ran in that first race, with Roy Heath winning the event in his TC. The average speed was 59.6 mph and the fastest laps were about four minutes.

Click here for this year’s full weekend schedule that includes Friday’s Race Car Parade and Concours, as well as Saturday’s Sports Car Parade, both in downtown Elkhart Lake.

During 1950s American sports car racing, one of the most competitive specials was the Echidna, which ruled SCCA C and B-Modified competition. Just three Echidnas were built and all three — including one owned by outgoing Vintage Motorsport Publisher Mike Silverman — will be at the WeatherTech International Challenge to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Echidnas 1959 B-Modified National Championship.

Along with honoring the MG and Echidna, Road America will celebrate the 53rd Anniversary of the Canadian-American Challenge or Can-Am Series. Unlimited engines, fat tires and unimaginable speed sums up what Can-Am was, with the McLaren team ruling the early years. They won five years in a row at Road America, twice with Bruce McLaren and once each with Denny Hulme, Peter Gethin and Peter Revson.

Their dominance was broken in 1972 when Porsche practiced extreme excess in their designs, building a twin-turbocharged 5.0-liter V-12 engine that put out well over 1000 horsepower. They hired Roger Penske’s team to run the car, and as expected, they won with George Follmer at Road America in 1972 and Mark Donohue in 1973. Each won the season championship.

Also on tap at this year’s event is the Masters Historic Formula One USA grid, joined by the brand-new Masters Endurance Legends USA Race Series.

If you’re coming to the event, plan to drop in at our booth in the vendor midway, near the Paddock Shop. Outgoing VMPublisher Mike Silverman, along with Gary Hunter and Circulation Manager Nick Lish, will look forward to swapping bench racing stories with you.

HSR/HMSA team up again at Mont-Tremblant

Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) continues its partnership with Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) this weekend with the 15th edition of the Le Sommet des Légendes at Circuit Mont-Tremblant, July 12-14, in the Canadian Province of Quebec.

The full-weekend event celebrates iconic race cars from more than the past 50 years on a legendary road course that itself is a rich part of North American motorsports history.

The very first SCCA Can-Am race, the Player’s 200, was held in 1966 at Mont-Tremblant. In addition to the landmark Can-Am race, Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant has hosted over the years the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Trans Am, IMSA and Grand Am sports car racing events.

Joining May’s HSR Barber Historics at Barber Motorsports Park, Sommet des Légendes is the second of consecutive partner events this year between HSR and HMSA.

The wide variety of competing race cars this weekend includes Prototypes from every generation, a full lineup of early and more contemporary “Classic Monoposto” and Formula Libre single-seat race cars, small-displacement sports cars and big-bore GT machinery.

The competition is made up of seven period-correct Run Groups, very similar in categories and competition to HSR’s class structure, and this weekend’s races will be points-paying rounds of the 2019 HSR series championships.

One of the Run Groups is for the Masters Historic Formula 1 USA series, which like HSR, makes its only 2019 appearance North of the Border this weekend.

The Mont-Tremblant event has grown in popularity with HSR competitors over the years. With more than 60 entries under the HSR flag — making up about half of the weekend’s competitors — the 2019 Sommet des Légendes is the largest showing in Canada to date in HSR’s history.

Following an unofficial test held today, the official three-day weekend schedule is anchored by Friday and Saturday practice and qualifying and Saturday and Sunday twin sprint races for all run groups.

Sommet des Légendes feature races include Friday’s Sasco Sports International/American Challenge race at 3:50 p.m. EDT and a pair of Enduros Saturday at 3:55 p.m. EDT and Sunday at 9 a.m. EDT.

The Sasco Sports race is a production-car showcase of big-bore North American-made iron racing head-to-head with top sports cars from Europe and beyond. The flat-out sprint has competitors racing for the overall win in addition to top-three honors in the International, American and all-Porsche classes.

Tickets for Le Sommet des Légendes are available at the Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant main gate ticket office from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day of the event. Sunday admission is $35, Saturday is $25 and the Friday single-ticket price is $15.

All tickets include gate admission, paddock access and free general admission parking. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paying adult, and proof of age may be required.

The race course is located right next to the Mont-Tremblant Ski Resort and Village that keeps its spectacular facilities and five-star restaurants open nearly year round. A highlight this weekend is the final three days of the Tremblant International Blues Festival that wraps up its annual 10-day celebration of blues music this Sunday.

Davy Jones, Mark Dismore gear up for VROC at IMS

Two stars of sports car and the Indianapolis 500 – Davy Jones and Mark Dismore – have filed entries for Sportscar Vintage Racing Association’s (SVRA) Vintage Race of Champions (VROC) Charity Pro-Am presented by Chopard Watch at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). Previous entries to the August 3 race include Johnny Rutherford, Willy T. Ribbs, Mike Skinner, and Geoff Brabham.

“Davy and Mark are top-level champions, really amazing talents,” said SVRA President and CEO Tony Parella. “Our VROC championship series continues to grow and the caliber of legendary drivers entering our charity pro-am races is evidence of that.

Dismore and Jones were both selected to compete in the elite IROC series twice. They join a growing list of former IROC drivers entering the VROC series. Others already entered are Rutherford and Brabham. More are expected in the coming weeks. Jones and Brabham are both former overall winners in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Chicago-born Davy Jones first gained notice when he placed third in the 1983 British Formula 3 championship behind Ayrton Senna. Bernie Ecclestone tested him for a Brabham Formula 1 seat the same year. Jones later competed in the New Zealand Formula Atlantic series, winning that country’s grand prix in 1984 and ’87. In 1986 he scored BMW McLaren’s only IMSA GTP victory at Watkins Glen. A top-tier sports car driver, he brought home the overall win in both the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 1990 24 Hours of Daytona. In an Indy car career spanning nine seasons, including six Indianapolis 500s, his best finish came at the Greatest Spectacle in Racing in 1996 when he was second. He placed seventh there in 1989.

Mark Dismore came back from a devastating accident at IMS in 1991 to nearly win the Indianapolis 500 ten years later before gearbox failure dashed his chances. He captured the attention of the American open wheel community in 1990 when he dominated the Toyota Atlantic (Pacific Division) championship, winning eight of ten races on the schedule. Just two years after his devastating injuries at Indianapolis he won overall at the 1993 24 Hours of Daytona driving Dan Gurney’s All-American Racers Toyota prototype with Rocky Moran and P.J. Jones. He returned to Indy car racing in 1996 with Team Menard and eventually became a star driver for Kelley Racing where he won the 1999 Texas Motor Speedway 500-kilometer championship race. Throughout his career, he competed in 64 Indy car races and in addition to his victory in Texas he won four pole positions.
