[h=2]GoDaddy to back Patrick's Daytona, Indy entries[/h] Thursday, 18 January 2018

Kelly Crandall / Images by Levitt/LAT

1.2k Shares
Danica Patrick will end her motor sports career competing with a sponsorship she's most recognized for – GoDaddy.

The company announced Thursday it will back Patrick's ventures in both the Daytona 500 and the Indianapolis 500. The effort has been called the "Danica Double."
GoDaddy has been a supporter of Patrick since 2006, when she was competing in the IndyCar Series. When Patrick made the move to stock cars in 2010, GoDaddy followed, and was Patrick's primary sponsor until 2015. As the face of the company, Patrick appeared in 13 GoDaddy Super Bowl commercials.
"This is definitely the way I want to finish my racing career – at these two iconic races, backed by my iconic, long-time sponsor," said Patrick. "GoDaddy was there for me when my career was just really starting so it's exciting to be getting back in the GoDaddy 'green' for my final two races.
"Our brands have always been powerful together, and I think it's awesome to have them at my side when I go 'all in' with my business after racing."
Patrick still has not announced the teams she will drive for in either race. She expressed earlier this month how things are progressing slower than she'd like. Her list of options became one less last week as Chip Ganassi Racing president Steve Lauletta revealed that CGR is out of the running to field Patrick in either race.

It was November when Patrick announced she would no longer be competing full-time in NASCAR after five seasons at Stewart-Haas Racing. She became the first female to win a pole in NASCAR's premier series when she captured the top spot in the 2013 Daytona, and her best finish in the event is eighth.
In the Indianapolis 500, Patrick made her mark with two top-five finishes in seven starts. Patrick has led 29 laps in the event.

"You could say, 'we're getting the band back together,'" GoDaddy chief marketing officer Barb Rechterman said. "It makes sense in that our goals are so well-aligned – she's passionate, tenacious and creative just like so many of our customers who are also looking to leverage the power of the Internet and turn their 'side hustle' into a full-time business. Danica absolutely epitomized the heart of our GoDaddy customers. We love it."

[h=2]Jones ready to inherit legacy of the No.20[/h] Tuesday, 06 February 2018

By Kelly Crandall / Image by Getty Images for NASCAR

Erik Jones isn't just climbing into a new ride this season at Joe Gibbs Racing; he knows he's taking over one of the sport's most successful car numbers.

So on Tuesday, Jones posted a video on his social media channels letting fans know he's up to the task. Beginning in Daytona, Jones is the new driver of the JGR No.20 Toyota, which for the last five years had been driven by Matt Kenseth. Kenseth scored 15 wins driving the No.20.
Other drivers of the No.20 for JGR include Joey Logano, who won two races between 2009 and 2012 as well as 2009 Rookie of the Year. And there was Tony Stewart. From 1999 through 2008, Stewart drove to Victory Lane 33 times and won two Cup Series championships (2002, 2005).
Logano, Stewart and Kenseth are highlighted in the video.
Jones, the 2017 Rookie of the Year, acknowledges "the history of the 20 car runs deep. ... I realize I have big shoes to fill and a tough challenge ahead, but I'm committed."

[h=1]Seven Cup cars penalized practice time Friday[/h] Dustin Long,

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida — Seven Cup teams, including Danica Patrick‘s team, will miss 15 minutes of the first practice session today, NASCAR confirmed.
NASCAR is penalizing the teams for being late to inspection.
Missing practice time will be the teams of Gray Gaulding, Michael McDowell, David Ragan, AJ Allmendinger, Brendan Gaughan, Mark Thompson and Patrick.

New this year is that teams will serve their timed penalties at the end of a practice session instead of the beginning of the session. Also drivers will be not forced to sit in their car at the end of pit road for the duration of the penalty. Instead, the car will be parked in the garage and the team will not be allowed near it.

'There are a lot of new things coming at me' - Byron

Saturday, 17 February 2018

Kelly Crandall / Images by Whitton, LaBounty/LAT

Adjusting to life as a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver is happening in more ways than one for William Byron.
"There are a lot of new things coming at me," Byron admitted. "It's been exciting seeing all the things that you get to do at the Cup level that I didn't get to be a part of before, and what I notice the most is the fan interaction.
"Also, my lifestyle is different. I'm living at the track now. It's so different from the hotel and traveling to the track every morning. I never had a coach before and now that's something that is very convenient."
Byron said the reaction from fans to his taking over Hendrick Motorsports' legendary No.24 has been encouraging, but he's mindful that many a close eye is being kept on his practice efforts and qualifying results.
Off the track is also providing unfamiliar territory. The 20-year-old reigning Xfinity Series champion is being recognized more. For instance, Byron was eating dinner in the Daytona area this week when he was stopped by a handful of people at the restaurant.
"That's a cool feeling and makes you realize that there are people knowing what we're doing," he said.
As Byron gets comfortable with the fans and being at the track more often – he said he likes seeing it lit up at night – he isn't going it alone. Both Jimmie Johnson and a former No.24 driver, Jeff Gordon, have already explained some of the challenges and logistics Byron will face. Watching how Johnson manages his weekend from start to finish leaves plenty to digest, too. In addition, journeyman Max Papis is playing the role of personal advisor for Byron.
"I have quite a few people in my corner helping me through each situation," he noted.
No matter the amount of preparation that might go into his rookie season, however, there will still be situations and decisions made on the fly. And Byron is ready for the times when he's going to have to learn for himself.
"Each series is a new challenge and exponentially hard," he said. "You really lean on all the information you have growing up in racing, whether that's legends cars, late models, or most recently the Xfinity Series and the championship there. I think I lean on all those experiences."

Daytona Xfinity finish closest in NASCAR history

[h=1]Tyler Reddick wins closest NASCAR race ever at Xfinity Series Daytona race[/h]

NEWS ANIO
Published on Feb 17, 2018

Tyler Reddick needed five overtimes, a brief red flag and the closest finish in NASCAR history to take Dale Earnhardt Jr.to victory lane.Reddick won the Xfinity Series' season-opening race by beating JR Motorsports teammate Elliott Sadler in a photo finish. The margin of victory was 0.000 seconds, breaking the mark set by Butch Miller when he beat Mike Skinner by 0.001 seconds to win the Truck Series race July 15, 1995 at Colorado National Speedway."How do I protest that? It's a tie, and it should go to the elder," joked veteran Sadler of the win that went to the 22-year-old Reddick.Reddick later joked a protest was still a winning proposition for the organization."Either way, JR Motorsports wins, right?" Reddick said."That was insane.I saw a picture of it 10 minutes ago and it was just enough." It was a nail-biting and tense opener at Daytona International Speedway for NASCAR's second-tier series, which celebrated its 100th race sponsored by Xfinity on Saturday.FOLLOW FOX NEWS AUTOS ON FACEBOOK FOR MORE The victory came in Reddick's debut race for JR Motorsports, the team in part owned by Earnhardt Jr.This is Earnhardt's first season in retirement from full-time racing and his presence at the race track is still strong through his race team.JR Motorsports has won five of the last nine Xfinity Series races at Daytona, and Reddick's victory led a 1-2 sweep for the company."Either way, fine with me," Earnhardt said of the finish."I watched the whole thing, it was incredible.I was surprised by the amount of overtimes.Fans want to see a green-flag finish and NASCAR tries everything it can to give them that opportunity." Sadler was temporarily crestfallen.Sadler finished second in the 2002 Daytona 500 and was passed for the lead right before the rain came in the abbreviated 2009 race. His best finish in all three of NASCAR's national series at Daytona is second."This one hurts a lot," said Sadler."I don't know how many more starts I'll have at this race track.I really want to get one of the trophies here at this place." For Reddick, it was his second Xfinity victory and in the biggest race to date of his career. He won once last year driving a partial schedule for Chip Ganassi, then moved to Earnhardt's team this season."A hell of a way to start the year off with JR Motorsports," Reddick said.Ryan Reed was third, and Kaz Grala fourth, in Fords.Garrett Smithley was a career-best fifth and Daniel Suarez was the highest finishing Toyota driver in eighth."Was it only five overtimes? It felt like a dozen," Grala said. The race was zipping right along and dominated by the combination of Kyle Larson, Joey Logano and Chase Elliott. Then a late accident sent the race to overtime.Larson, who led a race-high 61 laps, tried to block Aric Almirola after the restart and the contact caused Larson to spin and trigger an 18-car accident.Logano, who had led 28 laps, was also knocked out in the race.

By Kelly Crandall / Images by Kinrade & Levitt/LAT

It was worth the wait.

After the Xfinity Series race needed to go to a fifth overtime attempt Saturday afternoon at Daytona International Speedway, the margin of victory between Tyler Reddick and Elliott Sadler ended up being 0.000 seconds, officially the closest finish in NASCAR national series history.
Officials had to review photo evidence to declare Reddick the winner over his JR Motorsports teammate.

“He did a really good job of coming down on me right at the last minute to slow me down enough to get to me,” Sadler said. “But I still thought we were really at the line, which we were. But I didn’t know. I just didn’t know, and it’s hard to tell a lot of times with the angle that you’ve got [in the car].
"When my spotter came on the radio and said it was the 9 car, my balloon got deflated pretty quick.”
Said Reddick, “That was insane. I just saw a picture of it 10 minutes ago and it’s not much. … It just came down to the side draft.”
The previous closest finish was a 1995 Camping World Truck Series race at Colorado National Speedway where the margin was 0.001 seconds.
