The Charlotte Motor Speedway road course, or ROVAL, was officially unveiled Thursday.

The course layout features 18 turns over 2.4 miles and will be used for the first time in September 2018. It will be the first time the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series has raced on a road course in the playoffs.

On Thursday speedway officials announced the addition of two chicanes to the course; one will be on the backstretch, making up Turns 12 and 13, and the second chicane, Turn 18, will be off what is Turn 4 on the oval course. The hope is both chicanes will provide additional passing zones.
Also new is a Sports Fields Inc. synthetic turf. Designed to slow wayward cars down, the turf was laid by the chicane on the frontstretch. Features include:
  • 42,000 square feet of synthetic turf - more than half the length of a football field
  • 1,100 gallons of glue
  • 300,000 pounds of sand
  • 900 man-hours of planning and installation.
"As the Roval itself is an innovation, we believe this revolutionary new use of synthetic turf was the perfect fit for our world-class racing venue," said Marcus Smith, president and CEO of Speedway Motorsports, Inc., in a track release. "The turf is more manageable than grass, resistant to heat and it provides a smooth, speed-scrubbing surface should a car spin through it.
"We connected with Brian Storm and Sports Fields through an introduction by Kevin Harvick, and we greatly appreciate all of the hard work and creativity fueled into this project from Sports Fields. We're excited to see how the turf and the new chicanes add to the excitement for next year's Bank of America 500 on the Roval."
It was announced in May the second Charlotte race date would be a road course beginning next season.

This reminds me of the Daytona road course, except for a few turns.

'Roval' tire test set for Charlotte

Tuesday, 17 October 2017

By Kelly Crandall

A two-day Goodyear tire test begins today at Charlotte Motor Speedway in preparation of racing on the road course next season.

Martin Truex Jr., Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray and Xfinity Series driver Daniel Hemric are the drivers slated to participate. They will tackle the 18-turn course on the standard road course tire used at Watkins Glen as Greg Stucker, director of race tire sales for Goodyear, says the Charlotte road course matches up similar to the Glen because of the fast speeds.
Below: Take a lap of the Charlotte "roval" with A.J. Allmendinger:

"You look at it as a road course. We've got one fast road course on the circuit and that's Watkins Glen," Stucker said. "We think we have a pretty good package there; obviously we know what road course requirements are from a construction perspective. That's where we'll start and then just depending on how much the chicanes slow the cars down then we'll have some options to look at, some softer combinations.

"And we'll see if maybe we can go a little bit softer and add some grip because the infield portion, there's some pretty tight and slow corners – predicting speeds in the 35 mile-per-hour range. So, it's going to be some pretty tight bits inside [there]. We want to make sure we have enough grip to handle those as well."

Consisting of a firmer compound, this tire is run at all NASCAR road courses. Any changes regarding grip, which is the area Stucker repeatedly mentioned as something they will be working on, will depend on the data Goodyear gathers through tire temperatures, speeds and driver feedback.
Splitting the test into two days allows Goodyear and NASCAR to work through different agendas.
"The first part is going to be sorting through the backstretch chicane, there's about three different options to look at," Stucker said. "The morning of the first day is going to be looking at those three different configurations between NASCAR and the racetrack, trying to figure out what's the best option.

"That'll take a little bit of time and then we'll go through our short runs probably in the afternoon. Then as standard on the second day we'll go through our longer runs and kind of see how we look under those conditions."

When NASCAR visits Charlotte next fall it will be the first time a road course has been featured in the playoffs.

VIDEO: Charlotte finalizes Roval layout

The layout for the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course has been finalized.

During the opening day of the 2018 NASCAR Media Tour, hosted by CMS, track officials revealed a tweaked course that is now 17 turns and 2.28 miles. The change was in Turns 7 and 8, making that section of the course, which leads onto what is Turn 1 of the oval course, a sweeping turn instead of the tight left-hander than had been seen on one of the past designs.

The adjustment will make the lap times quicker and the course faster.

"With these updates, the Roval is sure to provide the best show for the fans and the most challenging road course for drivers," said track president and CEO of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Marcus Smith.

"We've obtained great feedback over the past year from champion drivers including Mario Andretti and Jeff Gordon, and with their help and collaborative effort with NASCAR, Charlotte Motor Speedway is proud to showcase this brand-new course on the NASCAR schedule. Fans are going to see a thrill show unlike any other when September rolls around and racing comes to the Roval."

Charlotte will make history this season when it hosts the first road course race in the playoffs. The Bank of America 500 is set for Sunday, September 30, and will be the elimination race in the Round of 16.

However, with the course design now finalized there is still one piece left to be worked out: race distance. NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O'Donnell told the assembled media on Monday that is "still TBD."

INSIGHT: The road to a Roval

Tuesday, 23 January 2018

Kelly Crandall / Images by Charlotte Motor Speedway; NASCAR Media

How the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course came to be is "funny, actually," according to Marcus Smith.

Charlotte already had an infield road course, but it was not up to modern standards and hardly used. However, Hendrick Motorsports likes to have corporate play days with their partners and with the courses in Las Vegas and Sonoma booked solid, a conversation between Hendrick and Bruton Smith kick-started what will be a history-making event this September when Charlotte hosts the first road course race in the playoffs.

"We started designing and building just an upgraded infield road course [after Hendrick and Smith talked about using it], and we did a great job with that," Marcus Smith, the president and CEO of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. told RACER.

"It's fantastic. It's part of the Roval design, and as we had it built out and did a lot of testing on it, had a lot of feedback on perfecting it, I was hearing a lot of talk among fans and drivers and media about this idea of having a road course in the playoffs. And I heard people talk about [how] there's too many mile-and-a-halfs in the playoffs, maybe we should change a little."

The answer, decided Smith [below], lay just outside his office window.

"I thought, you know what, this Roval is circuit is fantastic, maybe we could just use this," he said.

Consulting with the speedway's head of operations and development, Smith then laid out the challenge to his team about what it would take to host the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on the road course. Work began quickly, but Smith points to it all starting because of his father and Rick Hendrick wanting to upgrade the infield.

Monday afternoon, Smith showed off the completed layout that includes 17 turns over 2.28 miles. There are chicanes and rumble strips. Elevation changes throughout the infield portion of the course will also keep the field on its toes.

From the track's standpoint, the project was a labor of love. Numerous drivers gave early feedback, including four-time Cup champion Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, Max Papis and even Mario Andretti. Little details extend all the way down to the addition of synthetic turf off the oval's Turn 4, near the last chicane on the frontstretch.

"We take everything we do very seriously, and we want to exceed expectations for all the stakeholders when we do something, and I think that's been the tradition of Speedway Motorsports, whether that's been at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the last 58 years, or any one of our other speedways," said Smith.

"We've tried to design and build speedways that are above and beyond expectations, and it's no different with the Roval design and build-out. We absolutely want it to be a world-class road course that everybody will be impressed with and excited to watch."

According to Smith, there have been no cries of resistance, and as of late last year, Smith said ticket sales "are ahead" for the race weekend. Not that Smith was worried: road courses are in favor, and he's happy to give fans another one.

As for the course itself, the two chicanes came about after feedback from drivers, manufacturers, and Goodyear. The frontstretch chicane, Smith believes, will provide a last-chance passing opportunity, particularly on the last lap.

"Passing zones are really important in a road course design," said Smith. "A lot of road courses don't have a lot of passing zones – maybe one or two – and I think we've got probably four, maybe five passing zones on the course, and I think it's going to be really fun to watch."

And let's be honest, there also has to be a sense of pride for the Smith family, because once again, it's making a mark on NASCAR.

"You know, I guess it's part of my training from my dad," he said. "[He] likes to always out-do himself. He loves to build speedways that fans love, and drivers and teams love and are impressed with, and we wouldn't do it any other way. We want it to be fantastic for everybody."

'No room for error' on Charlotte roval - Menard[h=1]'No room for error' on Charlotte roval - Menard Image by Getty Images for NASCAR[/h]

By: Kelly Crandall May 1, 2018 11:13 AM

‘Survival’ continues to be the word brought up by drivers trying to forecast how racing on Charlotte road course will play out in the fall.
Paul Menard was the latest driver to use the word during a Goodyear tire test at the speedway Tuesday afternoon. Menard described how hairy the course is for just one driver trying to make laps, noting how he, along with Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch, found trouble in a previous test.
“There’s no room for error,” said Menard. “Try to push a little bit harder you’re going put yourself in trouble. You put 39 other guys out there it’s going to escalate it. So, it’s going to be survival for sure, and I think that’s the mentality I have.”
The Sept. 30 Bank of America 500 will be the first time a road course is featured in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. Adding to the excitement is that Charlotte plays host to the first elimination race of the postseason.
Breaking down the layout, which combines the 1.5-mile oval with the infield road course, Menard said drivers are likely to be in second gear all through the infield. The best passing zones will be the frontstretch chicane, going into Turn 1, and then a couple of opportunities through the infield.
After coming back on the track in what is Turn 1 on the oval and then flying down the backstretch, Menard said the chicane near Turn 3 of the oval is just to scrub speed.
“The bus stop is extremely fast, it’s not like Watkins Glen,” he said. “You will not be able to run side-by-side through there.”
Sonoma and Watkins Glen are the only other two road courses on the Cup Series schedule. And it was Watkins Glen that Menard compared the Charlotte road course.
“It probably feels more like Watkins Glen but much slower on the infield, and the infield section of the track feels like a true road course. It’s pretty wide; it has some nice flow to it and things,” Menard said.
“It’s just different, you have some nice flowing sections and some real point and shoot sections, I guess. It looks like Watkins Glen, it feels like Watkins Glen, but it has the grip of Sonoma.”
In addition to Menard, Trevor Bayne, Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch also participated in Tuesday’s session, which was a conclusion to the two-day test scheduled for March 20-21. Inclement weather forced the cancellation of the second day.
However, Menard called Tuesday a “truer test” as he felt the conditions were more reminiscent of what will be experienced during the race.
Charlotte Motor Speedway said the next time Cup Series drivers would have an opportunity to get on the road course will be during an open test in July. Xfinity Series drivers will not experience it until an extended practice/test session on the Thursday of race weekend.

By: Kelly Crandall July 10, 2018 2:05 PM Drivers cheating the chicane on the backstretch of the Charlotte road course forced NASCAR and speedway officials to make changes.Located at the end of the backstretch near the oval’s Turn 3, the purpose of the chicane is to scrub speed off the cars before they enter back onto the banking. Drivers then hit another chicane on the frontstretch before the start/finish line.

But Tuesday during an open test for Cup Series teams, drivers were simply rolling over the rumble strips, shortening their distance and not losing speed.During a break in the action because of a Darrell Wallace Jr. crash in a different section of the track, drivers and crew chiefs could be seen with officials out in the area discussing what was taking place.NASCAR later announced the decision was made to add two additional rows of rumble strips as well as a tire barrier.

“The changes on the backstretch were just to keep everybody honest and keep everybody on the line that was defined [by] putting the tire barriers out there and all that stuff,” said Ryan Newman. “It is what it is.“I hope it doesn’t change for the sake of us having the same opportunity as the guys next week at the test, but it’s been a learning experience for me all day.”Sixteen drivers participated in Tuesday’s session, which was pushed to end at 6 p.m. ET because of the delays. Richard Petty Motorsports did not continue with the test after Wallace’s accident in the morning. Fourteen drivers are slated for time at the speedway on Tuesday, July 17.

Charlotte will be the first elimination race of the playoffs when the series returns on Sept. 30.

And that’s where he sees contact occurring.“I think there’s going to be a lot of contact, for sure,” Allmendinger said. “Through the infield, it’s fairly narrow.”Logano and Allmendinger were two of the 14 drivers who participated in the second day of an open test (last Tuesday being the previous one) for Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series teams at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The first part of the day saw multiple incidents, giving credibility to Logano and Allmendinger’s expectations.Alex Bowman spun going into Turn 3 and hit the tire barrier with the nose of his Chevrolet. Fortunately, the damage was minor and his Hendrick Motorsports team just needed to change the splitter for him to resume testing.Ryan Blaney was not as lucky, needing his backup car after spinning around also in Turn 3. Blaney hit the tire barriers with the rear end of his No. 12. Erik Jones didn’t make any contact, but he too spun in the same area.

And William Byron had a big hit when he had a brake failure going into Turn 1. The No. 24 Chevrolet did not turn left for the corner, and Byron slammed head-on into the tire barrier. The accident ended Byron’s day.

“It’s just an off-camber, downhill entry to Turn 3, and that makes it pretty tough,” Logano said of the Turn 3 and 4 area being treacherous. “The corner itself, you’re turning to the right, there’s no banking and you’re going downhill.“The cars are just super, super loose there. It’s a pretty sketchy corner. There’s a few sketchy spots; that’s probably one of the sketchiest, if not the sketchiest.“Overall, I think the racetrack is fun. It’s different than any other road course we go to, which I don’t think is a bad thing in any way.”Logano says there is no part of the Charlotte road course that transfers from what drivers are used to seeing at Watkins Glen or Sonoma.“There’s passing zones probably from (Turns) 17 to 1,” Logano said. “Maybe (Turn) 4 to 5, possibly. (Turns) 5 to 6, there’s passing zone, and 7 to 8 maybe sneak your nose in there. The bus stop in the back, that’s going to be a tough spot to make passes.“There’ll be plenty of opportunity to pass, for sure. But you’re going to have to get the pass done and move on, because two-wide is going to kill your lap time and you’re going to lose touch with the cars around you.”Allmendinger, known for his road racing skills, also conceded he’ll have no advantage when the series takes the green flag, particularly since everyone is getting the chance to test the course. That combined with the uniqueness of the layout has Allmendinger looking forward to the race. “I love the challenge of it, for sure,” he said.

By: Kelly Crandall | October 1, 2018 9:19 AM Marcus Smith believes the inaugural road course race at Charlotte Motor Speedway lived up to the hype.“It was really an amazing day, a three‑year journey to get here, and everything just kind of culminated today and throughout this week,” the CEO and president of Speedway Motorsports Inc. said Sunday night. “I think everything that we saw on track, the competition was really phenomenal. The track was very raceable, and we saw cars go two wide, three wide on a couple of occasions where there’s a lot of concern about the width of the track and being able to race without a lot of red flags.

“I think this was another one of those amazing, memorable moments for — certainly for me and I think for NASCAR. When you think about great moments, the first time we ever turned on lights here at Charlotte Motor Speedway, ‘One Hot Night’ for the All‑Star, and then today the inaugural Bank of America Roval 400, I think for me, it really lived up to the hype.”

CRANDALL: NASCAR's surprise success story

Ryan Blaney wound up in victory lane after leaders Martin Truex Jr. and Jimmie Johnson crashed in the last chicane. Kyle Larson also charged on the final lap to grab one more spot that ended up putting him in the playoffs when the final transfer spot came down to a three-way tie.

Charlotte served as the first elimination race in the playoffs. It came down to the final lap. There was also a 15-car wreck in Turn 1 with six laps to go, started by leader Brad Keselowski locking up the tires and missing the corner.Of the finish, Smith said it wasn’t necessarily what he envisioned at the start of the day. However, he found it exciting and said the roar from the fans told him it was a moment many will remember for a long time to come.

“I think it was certainly more than I had expected and hoped for in terms of the excitement for our fans,” Smith said.

The Xfinity Series also competed on the road course in what was the second race of its first round of the postseason. Chase Briscoe earned his first career win.

CMS spent millions to make the road course a reality, giving the speedway a third unique event. The facility hosts the annual All-Star Race every May followed by the longest race of the year, the Coca-Cola 600. However, that doesn’t mean you should expect to see more road courses developed on other SMI oval properties, according to Smith.

“I’m not looking at any of our properties to add a road course into, to ‘Rovalizing,’ as you said,” remarked Smith. “I feel like this is unique to Charlotte, and we’ve got other speedways out there that produce their own unique action.

“Plus, on top of that, I’m really excited about all the things I’m hearing about next year’s racing with the new aero and power package. I think it’s going to be fantastic for the whole sport.”
