On May 28th 1983, a 25 year old German Racing driver named Stefan Bellof drove a Porsche 956 around the Nürburgring Nordschliefe in 6:11.13, a record that stands to this day, and one that doesn't look like it'll ever be beaten. So lets take a look at why that record stood unbeatable for all this time and possibly for ever.

Very nice video of the late Stefan Bellof. Every time I see a video of his life it is very sad. The potential this guy had was enormous. That being said, I really wish we could see the same spirit in prototype endurance racing of the 80's today. Yes things have improved a bit the last few years with more competition with the hybrid Audi, Porsche and Toyota. But that racing spirit of the 80's in prototype racing seems like the last great era in the racing category. To me it is the golden era of prototype sports car endurance racing.

Thank you, Herr Petrolhead, I really enjoyed your film. Watching and learning about fast cars has been a hobby and a passion since seeing what I think was the first satellite broadcast segments of Le Mans, 1964 I'm pretty sure. I was 10, and my father, who watched strictly for the technical aspects and wow factor of something broadcast into space from France then beamed to Los Angeles, explained how we could only see two or three hours at a time because of Telstar's orbit. The Ferraris won, I recall.

Excellent video! Informative and interesting. Great historical footage. So many things about that story that i was unaware, and this video so clearly laid out so many of the variables. Really shows how much of racing and speed is in the hands of the driver.

I'm just glad i own an 86 Porsche 944 turbo. Porsche clearly proved its genuine engineering dominance and superior heritage in the 24 of Le mans this year. The innovative technological breakthroughs during this time period are still proving their superiority even after many many years later. Case in point Porsche 944 turbo. The overall testing of knock sensors and computer aided boost applications were very apparent during time and furthermore throughout endurance testing amidst this era. That is why my car is so highly sought after still to this day.

Great video thank you! I don't think many younger folks grasp how fast the cars of Group C in Europe and IMSA GTP in North America really were. These cars had crushing down force without the drag penalty of open wheel cars. The Gurney Toyota Eagles were rumored to be capable of over 1100 hp in qualifying and made over 800 hp in endurance tune.

After that 84 monaco gp, I was a huge Bellof fan. At the detroit gp I remember thinking how he was "throwing" that car around the track. Read that he always drove at his limit and thats what killed him. An amazing driver, glad to see his record at the ring live on.

Wrong about who built the first ground effects car. It was Jim Hall who designed and built the Chaparral Can Am cars, first in 1965. They were big block Chevy aluminum engines and later Jim used a fan powered small engine to Suck the air from the bottom of the car with flexible skirts all around the bottom edges and blow the air out the back. The European car makers copied Jim Hall and the General Motors wind tunnels.
