On August 20, 1994, only hours after Ernie Irvan was seriously injured in Winston Cup practice at Michigan, Dale Earnhardt Jr scored his first late model victory at the Myrtle Beach Speedway. As the announcer mentions, this was the second race in Twin 50 lap features.

He also mentions that Junior "finally won," he had raced full-time in 1993 as well, finishing 2nd multiple times but never winning before. Other than Legends Cars victories, this was Dale Jr's first win ever. As the announcer tell Jr he has a call to make up to Michigan, Dale Earnhardt Sr wrecked and finished 37th there the following day in the 1994 GM Goodwrench Dealers 400

August 20th marks a significant anniversary for Dale Earnhardt Jr's racing career. It has nothing to do with the Monster Energy Cup Series or even the Xfinity Series; this goes farther back. On August 20, 1994, Earnhardt scored his first win in a stock car, winning a late model race at Myrtle Beach Speedway.



Dale Jr's racing career began in Legend cars in 1992. The following year, the 18 year-old Earnhardt moved up to late model racing with an old family friend.

In the 1960s, Gary Hargett raced on Carolina short tracks against Ralph Earnhardt. In the 1970s, he co-owned a team with Dale Earnhardt. By 1993, Dale Jr caught his eye and the young man began racing his late models weekly at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Driving the number three car, of course.

Being the son of a racing icon certainly comes with a lot of privileges. But drawbacks appeared pretty quickly. It just so happened that them local boys down in Myrtle Beach sure liked to beat on Earnhardt Jr.

"The first year we ran down there everybody wanted to turn Junior around," Hargett said in a interview with Larry Cothren. "I mean, it would be every week. I told him he was just going to have to take it because they were all going to do it. I said 'Everybody who races wants to run over Dale Earnhardt. Well they're never going to get the chance to run over your daddy, so they're going to take it out on you' and they roughed him up bad that first year."

There's a fine line between accepting the usual rookie hazing and getting stepped on. By the end of his first year, Jr had to stand up for himself and prove his strength. As the story goes, in late 1993, Junior was leading a race on the last lap when he was spun. The next week, Hargett advised him to wreck the other driver right at the start to send a message.

"This boy was on the inside of the row right in front of Dale Jr. Well, they gave the green, and when they went down into turn one, Junior just turned him the wrong way and he went through a steel gate down there. Before they got to the backstretch, Junior said, 'Well, was that good enough?' I said 'Yeah, if you didn't kill him, it is.'"

Driving a white, Mom 'n' Pops sponsored car, Junior ran strong in his first year and a half but still searched for that breakthrough victory, the track dominated by only a few drivers.

On the morning of August 20, 1994, Ernie Irvan was critically injured practicing at Michigan International Speedway in Cup Series competition. A dark cloud hovered over all of auto racing as the man second in Cup points was not expected to survive the night. Under a full moon and 800 miles away, twin 50 lap late model races were scheduled at Myrtle Beach.

Starting second in the first race, Junior fell back to fourth within two laps. Nursing a loose race car, he remained in that position for the rest of race one.
For the second event, the top four finishing positions were inverted, meaning Earnhardt started on the pole for race two. After racing side by side for the first two laps, Junior pulled away with the lead. Over the next 50 laps, no one could pass him. At the finish, Earnhardt held off a hard-charging second place finisher by a car length to win his first race. As he sped under the checkered flag, Junior raised his left hand out the window in triumph.

As Dale Jr drove to victory lane, track announcer, Bill Hennecy, spoke of the significance of the moment. He mentioned how Junior was likely to run in the Busch Series and how Earnhardt Sr was planning to form a Cup team, this win was the beginning of a long career.

"It was real exciting, you can't put it into words what it feels like," Earnhardt said in victory lane. With this win, Junior became the third generation of his family to win at Myrtle Beach.

"I'm glad that this place has the history it's got with my family. I'm just real happy for the crew, they really worked hard all year long, all last year. We come out here, and they had a boy that didn't know what he was doing out there and they finally got him talked into how to get around this race track pretty straight."

As the interview ended, Hennecy reminded Junior he had a phone call to make up to Michigan. Earlier that day, Dale Earnhardt Sr. finished 32nd in the Busch Series event on the two mile Michigan International Speedway. In the Cup race on Sunday, Earnhardt crashed on lap 55 with Todd Bodine and finished 37th.

Two years after his first win, Dale Jr made his first start in Busch Series competition at Myrtle Beach Speedway. He finished 14th in his debut race. After a successful career, Tony Stewart returned to his short track roots in 2017. Maybe Myrtle Beach can expect an encore from Mr. Earnhardt as well.
