Stock Car Racing Brad Keselowski Ford Kentucky Speedway Design a new car
[h=2]Time for NASCAR to design new car - Keselowski[/h] Saturday, 08 July 2017
An early crash at Kentucky Speedway left defending race winner Brad Keselowski unsurprisingly upset.
Keselowski got loose in Turn 3 and made contact with Clint Bowyer, who was running on the outside. Keselowski's car then continued upward and hit the wall.
The No. 2 Ford was heavily damaged and Keselowski's night was over before the 100-lap mark.
"I just got in an aero wake, and it pulled me around," Keselowski said. "I knew I was in a bad spot. I was trying to lay up, but there is only so much you can lay up here because you get ran over from behind.
"The air pulled me around. It sucks."
Keselowski's frustration also stemmed from the racing.
Even though Kentucky made the decision to run the tire dragon in the middle lane, above where it was originally run coming into the weekend, Keselowski felt it was still a one-groove track. Drivers stuck to the bottom of the track and many described the racing conditions as slick.
After his accident, Keselowski went further by saying it was time for a change to be made.
"It is time for the sport to design a new car that is worthy of where this sport deserves to be and the show it deserves to put on for its fans," Keselowski said.
The tire dragon, as well as VHT (track resin), has been a popular go-to at tracks where officials felt it necessary in order to improve the racing. However, Keselowski doesn't believe it is enough.
"They made a good effort," Keselowski said of Kentucky. "It was better than nothing, but there are limitations. The way this car is, it needs a lot more help than a tire dragon. It is a poorly designed racecar, and it makes racing on tracks like this very difficult to put on the show we want to put on for our fans.
"You do what you can to gouge and claw on the restarts and get everything you can get. You have to put yourself in bad situations to do that, and that is where we were. If you don't make those moves on the restarts, then you run in the back. Or you have a bad day. The scenario that the car design, more than the track."
Keselowski will be credited with a 39th-place finish.

Keselowski: France needs to spend more time at the track

Brad Keselowski doesn't want to be a NASCAR official, because with so much abuse from those on the outside, he believes it looks like one of the worst jobs ever.
But the Penske driver was pressed during his session on the Media Tour about what he would change in NASCAR if he could. And even after admitting he could get in trouble with such a question, he didn't shy away.
"I would change to where the leader of the sport is at the race track every weekend," Keselowski said.
NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France has faced backlash before about his lack of visibility. In 2016, Tony Stewart was outspoken concerning France's infrequent appearances at the track, and also expressed that France should be involved in driver council meetings instead of having others report to him.

[h=2]Keselowski hopes Hawkeye inspections will level Cup field[/h] Saturday, 27 January 2018
Kelly Crandall / Image by LaBounty/LAT
Ford may not have a body update rolling out this season, but Brad Keselowski is looking at a new NASCAR tool to help even the playing field.
Keselowski was less than optimistic about his manufacturer's chances to compete against the 2018 Camry body (introduced last year) and the Chevrolet Camaro coming this season. Representing Ford as part of the Championship 4 in 2017 along with Kevin Harvick, Keselowski finished fourth in the standings and then went as far as to say Ford was in for a "drubbing" if they didn't get help going forward.
Keselowski now believes help could be coming in the form of NASCAR's new inspection process. Hawkeye, as it's being called, will be a faster and more efficient way to tech cars before they hit the racetrack.
"That [inspection system] will be the determining factor in what manufacturer is successful this year," said Keselowski. "If the Hawkeye system comes in working fully, I think we will see a very level playing field in 2018 and we are capable of winning."
Policing the cars and teams to catch things that had been getting by in the past is a sticking point for the 2012 champion.
"It is inherent to the designs of the cars that some things weren't able to be policed before that were designed into other cars that, with this system, it will eliminate them," Keselowski said.
"Basically, when the cars are submitted to NASCAR they have to all have the same performance criteria but there has not been a system to enforce that that is what you actually race. To fully enforce that is what you actually race. The Hawkeye stem is intended to fully enforce that."
Other Ford drivers to share Keselowski's thoughts included Roush Fenway Racing drivers Trevor Bayne and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Kevin Harvick and Stewart-Haas Racing switched to Ford last season and worked hard to find the balance and competitive speed it needed. While they were not outspoken about the current Ford model, Harvick did acknowledge the Ford Fusion is now behind its competition.
"We have a car that is designed for a huge spoiler in the back and is the older car on the race track compared to the other manufacturers," he said.
"It took us a little bit to get things situation last year with the balance. We could face those balance issues again this year that we might have to work through as we go into the year just because of the way they are going to inspect the cars with the Hawkeye system. With the new splitter rules you are looking at a few hundred pounds of downforce taken off the cars. ... We may come out of the box great, but you don't really know until you get to the race track. We worked through those issues last year. It took us a bit but we might have to work at them again."
A body change is expected for Ford next season. However, Ford officials have been quiet as to whether it will be the Mustang moving into the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
