Dale Earnhardt Jr. will join NBC next season, the network that covers the second half of the NASCAR season.

The SportsBusiness Journal reported the news Monday morning. NBC Sports then "welcomed" Earnhardt to the team via Twitter.


Earnhardt is set to retire from NASCAR competition at the end of the season. A 14-time winner of the Most Popular Driver award, Earnhardt has competed in the NASCAR Cup Series full-time since 2000. To date, Earnhardt has won 26 career races, including two Daytona 500s.

Since announcing his retirement in April, Earnhardt has often spoken about the possibilities of other work within racing. Last year, Earnhardt joined the Fox Sports booth to call the Xfinity Series race at Michigan.

Earlier this year, Earnhardt did the same for The Clash at Daytona, since he was not competing in the event. Television work is something Earnhardt has stated more than once he enjoys and would be interested in doing again if the opportunity arose.

NBC says that Earnhardt "will be utilized in a number of capacities on NBC’s NASCAR coverage, with specifics to be announced in the coming months. In addition, the agreement with NBCUniversal allows Earnhardt a wide range of opportunities in the company’s media businesses, including movies, television, podcasts, and other areas."

NBC has also partnered with Earnhardt for his other business, including Dirty Mo Radio and Hammerhead Entertainment, which is his production company.

"Dale Jr. brings credibility, personality, and popularity to our already winning NASCAR team," said Sam Flood, Executive Producer and President of Production, NBC Sports. "Giving him a chance to spread further within other NBC Sports Group properties and throughout the company is an added bonus."

"It is a tremendous honor not only to join NBC Sports next year but to begin a new career alongside people who love NASCAR as much as I do," said Earnhardt. "To be reunited with Steve Letarte, to be able to call legends like Jeff Burton, Dale Jarrett and Kyle Petty teammates rather than just friends, to be able to continue going to the track and connecting with race fans, it's a privilege I don't take lightly. I will devote my heart and soul to this broadcast team and pledge my very best to the millions who watch it."

If Dale Earnhardt Jr. wants to make the playoffs and contend for a championship in his final season he's going to have to win one of the next six races.
And of the races coming up, Earnhardt sees a few where he could pull that off.
"Michigan is a good one, that's a good race for us," Earnhardt, who is 22nd in points, said Saturday at Pocono Raceway. "Bristol? I could probably win there. Darlington? Man, if we come close that is a win. That place is tough, but you never know. We will just have to keep showing up and see what happens.

"You've got to keep trying. I think here and Michigan are tracks that I obviously have got some wins, recent wins, at. So, there is going to be some more expectations going into those or more confidence going into those."
Earnhardt swept the races at Pocono in 2014. He has never won on a road course, which is where the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series visits next weekend. In 16 starts at Watkins Glen International, Earnhardt has three top-10 finishes, including a career-best third in 2003.
"We've got to go into Watkins Glen like we can win," said Earnhardt. "We've got to go in there with that attitude if we want to win. If that opportunity falls in our lap, you have to have your head on straight. We'll go to all these tracks with a great, positive attitude and see how it works out for us, but here and Michigan are probably the ones at the top of the list."
If Earnhardt doesn't make the playoffs, there's always the possibility of grabbing a win before the year is over. In 2014, Earnhardt was eliminated from the playoffs after the second round but then won at Martinsville Speedway.
Martinsville is what came to Earnhardt's mind when he was asked how it would feel to miss the playoffs but still find a way to win a race. After the disappointment of 2014, Earnhardt described Martinsville as a victory celebration like no other.
"You're going to be disappointed if you don't make the playoffs. There'll be a big hurt in your heart because you feel like you deserved to be in that group," Earnhardt said. "You feel like you're good enough and feel like your team is good enough and when you don't make it, it doesn't feel good. But if you can win a race during that time when those other guys are trying to win that championship, it's a bit of a statement I think for everybody that's not in the playoffs.
"It's a great feeling; maybe a better feeling to do that than to win any of the regular season races. So, that would be awesome if we could do that. If we can win any race before the end of the season, just to go back to victory lane and know that feeling one more time before it's over with, that would be awesome."

Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s final paint scheme as a full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver will resemble his first.
Wednesday night, the Hendrick Motorsports driver appeared on QVC as part of his #Appreci88ion to unveil his Axalta Chevrolet for Homestead-Miami Speedway. The car's livery will bring fond memories for longtime 'Junior Nation' fans as the scheme mimics the Budweiser Chevrolet that Earnhardt drove in his first five starts in 1999.
Notable is the primary red car with black stripes and black roof. NASCAR's only officially licensed artist, Sam Bass, designed the scheme. Bass also designed Earnhardt's first paint scheme.
"We actually talked to some of the guys on the team to get the proper paint codes so that we knew that we were doing the right thing and doing this from the top to the bottom as good as we possibly could," Earnhardt said. "It was important to me that the car replicated the actual racecars as close as possible. Sam (Bass) was incredibly involved in the design back in the late '90s. He was involved in the designs of a lot of our cars and him and my father were great friends. Sam did do a lot of these designs at DEI."
In his Cup Series debut, Earnhardt finished 16th at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Earnhardt's first full season occurred in 2000 and although he came up short in capturing Rookie of the Year honors to Matt Kenseth, Earnhardt did earn his first two career wins at Texas and Richmond (pictured below).
Earnhardt also became the first rookie to win the All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. After pitting for fresh tires, Earnhardt charged through the field and passed former champions Dale Jarrett and his father, Dale Earnhardt Sr.
Throughout his tenure at Dale Earnhardt, Inc. the primary Budweiser scheme changed very little for Earnhardt. And before Earnhardt left his late father's company for Hendrick Motorsports, Earnhardt won 17 races in a Budweiser-sponsored car, including his first Daytona 500 in 2004.
In April, the 42-year-old announced this season would be his last after 18 full seasons. To date, Earnhardt has won 26 career races in the Cup Series. He is 22nd in points entering Watkins Glen this weekend.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn't just want to win at Talladega Superspeedway, he wanted to prove the doubters wrong.
Earlier this week, Earnhardt tweeted his success at Talladega started because of a chip on his shoulder. A chip the size of Jimmy Spencer.

See, in 2001 Earnhardt won the July race at Daytona International Speedway after his father Dale Earnhardt Sr. lost his life at the same track that February. It was a storybook moment. A feel-good night for a healing sport and family. But to Spencer, it was too good to be true and he questioned the legality of Earnhardt's win afterward.
That October, Earnhardt won at Talladega. It started a run of unprecedented dominance for both himself and Dale Earnhardt Inc. on restrictor-plate tracks. In 2002, Earnhardt swept the races at Talladega and then won in the spring of 2003 to make it a record four straight. In 2004, he won the Daytona 500 and he has since added two Daytona wins (2014 Daytona 500; 2015 summer race) as well as two more wins at Talladega.
From 2001 through 2004, Dale Earnhardt Inc. drivers (Earnhardt and Michael Waltrip) won 11 of the 16 restrictor-plate races run. Going into Sunday's Alabama 500 (2 p.m. ET, NBC) Earnhardt is the winningest active driver at the track (six) in addition to having led the most laps (960).
Asked Friday afternoon how badly and how long the Spencer sting stayed with him, Earnhardt revealed it has never gone away. Here is his answer in its entirety:
"Mike Davis [who works at JR Motorsports], he used to work for Jimmy Spencer, and Jimmy Spencer's the guy that got out of his car that night after that race and said, boy, that's fishy how good that car was. And Mike has two of Jimmy's die-casts on his cabinet in his office and every time I walk in that office and see those die-casts that's the only thing I think about. So, it bothers me today. A lot of times, myself included, you don't think before you speak but that was incredible night for us in 2001 when we won that race and I just felt like that even if he did feel that way, I was disappointed that he would do that and say that. For us to come back here the next race and win and then have success over the next several years sort of was like, 'Hey, it's wasn't a one-race fluke or illegal car, that's just how good our program was at the plate tracks.'
"If you guys remember the partnership we put together with [Andy] Petree and [Richard Childress Racing] and all that stuff was geared directly toward making our plate cars better and those three teams, even Petree's stuff, was amazing at the plate tracks, always running up front. Of course, it's Jimmy Spencer – that's kind of the thing he does, but I never really liked that too much. Haven't forgotten about it, I guess it's hard to forget something like that.
"It was nice to keep winning and show people that was legit because for me, that's the stuff movies are made of. To come back there after Dad passed away and win that race was the greatest thing I could imagine happening for me or anybody else, all his fans, all our family. That was a big deal for all of them. It was a crazy experience."
Earnhardt's plate success was not limited to points-paying events. He is also a two-time winner of the Clash and has five wins in the Daytona qualifying races. Going even further, seven of Earnhardt's 24 career wins in the Xfinity Series have been at Daytona and Talladega.
After discussing his past success, Talladega then presented Earnhardt with gifts to commemorate them. Earnhardt received a champagne bottle from the same case back when he won his 2001 Talladega race, as well as one from one of his father last Cup victory in 2000.
The biggest gift – and the one that had Earnhardt smiling the most – was what sat outside the media center. Talladega presented Earnhardt with the car his father drove to the 1980 championship (below). After checking out the car, Earnhardt fired it up and made some laps around the speedway.
