Smokey is a local legend in Daytona, Florida. He owned a garage which essentially made this car using a Ford frame and Chevelle sheet metal. This was indicative of the changes he made to make the car go faster and be a winner at Daytona. He moved the engine to the left of the frame to better navigate the Daytona oval. He sliced and extended the front bumper to act as an air dam. Glass was flush with the body and the back bumper feathered into the rear sheet metal. All the tricks to make the car more streamlined. The engine was a Chevy "rat" motor, destroked at 417 c.i., 450 h.p. @ 7600 rpm. All this was done, and NASCAR wouldn't clear it for racing. All this material was quoted in the plaque at the end of the video. Smokey Yunick...from the Corvette guys
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf1EjjjzdSc As far as I'm concerned, mineral based lubricating oils are about as antiquated as the Model-T." "I would buy and use a synthesized polyester-based engine oil--even if I had to pay $10 a quart or more for it" from POWER SECRETS by Smokey Yunick (1983) driver9313 Smokey was the man! In '86 Chevrolet invited Smokey to drive all the GM production cars. After Smokey finished driving them GM asked what he thought. Smokey said they should shut down the assembly lines and redesign all the vehicles. GM didn't want to hear that and they never asked Smokey again but Smokey was right. Everything GM made then was crap. https://yt3.ggpht.com/-dDvtre2tCtM/A...ffff/photo.jpg DoubleVisionandco Smokey always lived by the simple saying "Tell it like it is" and he did,,, Unless it had to do with the competition in a race. "I can tell you not to call their next years models junk if you want to get paid by them.....I know first hand that'll tick em off" |
