Default interesting article about music production

It was in TBT a few days ago.

Seems that more and more producers and groups are using MP3's, and more specifically ipods as their end goals. That is, they are mixing the final products to sound good with lots of compression, and through tiny earbuds, since that's where most music ends up these days.

They are also mastering songs louder, for the same reasons.

Worse yet, when asked, most ipod users assumed that they were getting 'cutting edge' sound, from their ipod, since it was a 'cutting edge' device.

Great...

There is a quite informative video that literally shows you what they do, wish I could find a link.

We get this all the time "I can't believe my iPod doesn't sound better through my new XYZ deck than the CD's I play?" But, I am seeing a trend (and it seems pretty successful so far) where the midline decks (we usually run the Pioneer 4900) where you can fine tune just the iPod input with it's own gain, bass/mid/treble controls, staging, etc. With a little playing on these better decks, a pretty decent sound can actually be achieved. The problem is, spending the hour showing the customer how to do it...

ipods have horrible sound reproduction to save battery life =( It will only get worse.

I can forsee a time when 72kb/s music is the standard.
