Subsonic Filters...over rated?
 

Some people say subsonic filters are over rated. Some say they are needed for ported enclosures not to mess up. I want to know what you gues think mainly because I want to buy a new amp and I am debating which one to get only because of the subsonic filter. The amps are the JBL 1200.1 which does not have one and the hifonics 1500 which does. So what do you guys think?

The amp you buy doesn't have to have one you can buy an external one. But they are important if you're running a ported box.

I've never used one and have never had a problem, if that says anything. Guess it all depends on just what kind of limits you plan on pushing your system to. If you're that worried about it though, pick one up, I believe you can find them for less than $10.

tbs r u running a ported box? I want to run it sealed right now then move on to ported later, but i hear SF are jus a myth and it doesnt really help nething

If you send a signal below the tuned frequency of the port than you can damage your sub because it behaves as if it's not in an enclosure. That is the reason for a SSF to make sure you don't send your sub anything below what your box is tuned to.

Yes, my box now is ported. I've had it this way for close to 2 years now, no ssf.

Ive never used the subsonic filter on any of my amps and never had any problems with ported boxes. If you build ported boxes properly to the manufacturers specs you should no problems.

The purpose of a subsonic filter is so you do not overextend the speaker and detach the lead going from you voice coil to the cone. You could also damage the surround. You can’t hear below a certain frequency. So it is point less for you to go down that low. The lower the freq the more the cone extend or flexes back and forth. As far as box tuning you can go below the point wear a box is tuned but there is a limit to how far. Example if you box is tuned for 60 hertz. Then your roll off is about 25-30 hertz if your box is tuned for 100hz the roll of is about 50-60hz
