Some Very Cool Finds at the SCCA National Tour (Atlanta, GA)
I love when I go to National Tours for Autox because not only do I get to compete against some very fierce competition that kicks my ass which is great but I also get to see some really cool cars. Like this one:

This BM (B Modified) car is a 73 Honda Z600. The body was picked up at a California junkyard and used to make the fiberglass mold and that was used to make the carbon fiber body which weighs 56 lbs. Total car weight with driver 1072 lbs. The power plant is a Hayabusa engine with an overbore.
The car originally was built for the DM (D Modified) class but due to a rule change of not allowing motorcycle engines in the class they were forced to mod again to fit into BM. Anyone that has ever tried to read the rules for SCCA Autocross will tell you to hand them a beer and call an attorney to interpret them. Anyway. So they had to adjust the weight to meet class specs and add the fenders.
The couple who owns this car has had this as their project for 5 years and counting. They say its an insane blast to drive. Unfortunately they were with my run group and staged a few cars away so I was unable to see this run. I'm sure there is vid to be seen on YouTube somewhere.

Nice Splitter which was also designed to pick up those cones that decide to get in its way.

Interior - quite simple really

No ricer wing here this is used to give the car the much needed down-force.

Next up is the EP (E Prepared) Silver Bullet. This Civic has gone unbeaten for years with its previous owners and had many competitors chasing it. Infact when it went up for sale the competitor trying to beat it bought it. This Civic is powered by a SOHC that is said to spin up to 11,000 RPM. Yep. That is higher than a Type R. I couldn't find the owners to find out more about the car but I would have loved to hear about that engine build.
In EP the engine must be original, meaning it cannot be a Frankenstein motor, the head and block must match from the factory. Internals can be changed out and upgraded which is obviously what they have done. Simply amazing what people can engineer when they want to win.

I know there are some on here who put me down for actually going out and competing with my car but no matter what anyone says the smile on my face and the addiction that this is, is something no one can ever tell me is wrong. It was amazing to compete against multi National Champion drivers. To see them drive ... just wow. And the friends you make. Like they say, "I went to Atanta to party and an Autocross broke out." ATA you guys rock!

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

So what do we do to relax after the races? 4 Square anyone? The rules are more grown up then when we were kids. It seems those with beers in hands over rule those without beers in hand. And when it comes to the guy playing with a glass bottle of tequila who also dives for the ball, saves it and the has the bottle still in hand, well he pretty much rules. lol.
