How To - Simple Valve Cover Breather Setup
I didn't feel like spending the money to order AN fittings and have them welded on the the valve cover so I found a different way to vent the cover. I feel like it turned out really well and for a decently low price. Anyhow, here is a step by step with pictures and detailed info on the parts needed. Hope you enjoy.
Parts needed:
1/2" Drill Bit
23/64" Drill Bit
Electric Drill
Red Loctite
JB-Weld
VHT Wrinkle Black (or whatever color you want) 350 degree valve cover spray paint
Watts Model # A-739 Elbow Fitting (need 4 of them)
Watts Model # A-293 Hose Barbe Adapter (need 4 of them)
---The above Watts items are sold in the plumbing section of Home Depot
First you need to choose the valve cover and the location of where you want the vent installed. Drill the holes with the 1/2" drill bit and ream them out until just before the elbow drops into the hole. You want to still be able to tighten the elbow down into the hole without it just dropping in. You can use a bigger drill bit but 1/2" was the biggest I had available.

The above pictures are just for reference, the actual barb section is larger.
Next step is to assemble the elbow and the barbs together. Put some loctite on the barb thread section and tighten into the elbow. Use wrenches to get them together really snug but make sure not to go so deep as to block off the hole on the opposite end of the elbow. The reason why is because you will be drilling out the elbow a bit larger so it can breathe better. Once all the elbow and barb ends are secured together, grab your 23/64" drill bit. You will be drilling out the side of the elbow that DOES NOT have the barb attached. Drill out all the elbows now. This will open the inside of the elbow up so that the hole size will match that of the other end and the hole size on the barb fitting.
Below are the exact packages the fittings come in. The purple one is the elbow, the yellow is the barb fitting.

Next, we will install the assembled and ported elbow/barb fitting piece into the valve cover at the locations that were drilled out. Screw them all the way down and then back them completely out. This will basically be tapping the hole. Now we will mix some JB Weld up and put it on the threaded portion of the elbow. Don't put a lot on it, just enough to cover up the threads at the tip...this is because as you screw it down the JB Weld will get pushed up to the top of the valve cover and you don't want a huge mess. This is just being used to attain a good seal and help add some strength to the mounting point of the vents.
The finished product after painting should look like this...

And this is the paint I used...

You will need to plug off the oil fill hole along with the spark plug holes. Be sure not to paint until the JB-Weld has had it's full 15 hours of cure time. Prep the surface of the valve cover with a pre-paint cleaner before painting. The more prep time you give and the cleaner the surface, the better the paint will adhere.
