1991 Acura Legend Coupe 3.2 to 3.5 Build.
ok first almost all of this was just copy and paste from my thread on the legend board so yeah some peoples names and what not are just in there......and well since i own one of those hondas that no one likes or feels the need to build
ill give somewhat of a background on it.
its a legend coupe LS with a 3.2 v6 in it stock and not many choices for swaps on these cars.
A: keep it a stock type 1
B: swap in a usdm stock type 2 engine
C: swap in a jdm type 2 engine
D: swap in a 3.5 engine from the acura RL.
E: do the 3.5 hybrid swap with a RL block and a mix and match of legend parts.
ive had the car since 2007 and has been a great car. rides great,pulls pretty good for being a huge heavy car.
Thursday July 23, 2009, started to burn alot more coolant and decided to go ahead with the 3.5 swap.
so that afternoon i ordered my 3.5.
3 days later i get this dropped off at work.




from a 98 RL with 66k on it. one of the cleaner engines we have seen come in. was in great shape.
and there it pretty much sat next to my tool box for over a month lol.
managed to limp it over for the Aug central florida meet with no issues of over heating.

so i slowly started buying new gaskets and what not to go over the 3.5 with new items included:
Timing belt
water pump
cam seals
crank seal
t stat
intake manifold gaskets
new heater hoses
rear main seal
drive belts
injector o rings
exhaust manifold gaskets
tensioners
and some other stuff at that point but i forget
finally found a 3.5 mount bracket seems nick and i were battling for it lol 1 left and i managed to swipe it .....
then went to the junk yard with a really good friend and co worker of mine who found me a spare 91 mount bracket so iam not down any more time with it and i can send both out...thanks steve (SEEKERone).

was going to paint my valve covers and intake manifold some crazy ass color but was/am on the fence about selling the car so i decided to go black with the intake manifold and still undecided for valve covers...prolly wrinkle red though.
painted and new clear hoses installed...ordered hoses from some online store...

intalled new timing belt and h20 pump, seals, etc....




and before you slam me for the camo valve cover ....dont it was just something i was tring on a junk cover. it has a hole in it and is trash i was just testin out some paint. and yeah i know the polished one isnt done yet i just laid both them on so i wouldnt drop things in the heads but iam debating going with the polished look or paint them both wrinkle red...kinda like the type r valve covers....what cha think? but being bored at work with no work just decided to use some air craft remover and then try and see how they would polish out. then did the fuel rails to check those out. iam going to finsh the rails out and then have them clear coated cause i like those but unsure about leaving the valve covers.....








well tonight i finally finished all the polishing,painting and detail work on the 3.5. resealed the oil pan and yeah i know i got overspray on my manifold covers but iam going to use the stock ones since they are not rusty or banged up. polished up the front bracket, egr valve top and now that i look at it i may take the egr valve apart and polish the whole thing lol. got the new orings for the axle shaft tube and new axle seals. some royal purple oil, crowing send me a shared_pm sayin my bracket was on its way and even was nice enough to send me a pic lol. (thank you very much sir). well now iam just waiting to sell some ish so i got some cash to send my ecu to telion and get a weekend that i dont work on saturday that way i can stay late on friday, come in on saturday and finish up some small stuff on sunday. well enough b.s. enjoy the pics and let me know what ya think?....

ok so major thanks to alan for making the 2 hour ride south to come get dirty lol. thanks for your help and sorry for getting shitty towards the end that whole intake thing had/has me fucked up. but iam happy with the progress made for my first one on the first day but tomorrow is another day.....
i do have a few questions though. ...matt had told me to ditch the RL intake manifold and to use the T1. at first i was like why since everyone says they are pretty much the same but now that i have it sitting side by side i can see why all that control vacume shit on the back is a cluster fuck. and iam not sure why people say you can use both exhaust manifolds since you have that pair tube shit running to the one. as far as the diaprhams on the back is it worth gutting this T1 mainfold???? and if so can i ditch all that shit on the back??? if so does it change how the car runs? i mean honda put alot of hours of testing and putting that shit into production for a reason iam sure? so since iam going to use the T1 intake should i gut it? id really like to clean this bay up a bit....i know this is a lot of bullshit questions but that DIY is soooooo vauge now that iam into this thing. so what about all the damn vacume hoses and shit can i ditch most of them if the intake gets gutted?
well here is the progress made today. tomorrow ill jump on the intake if i get some responses as what to do with that thing.

how it sits as of now...got my type 1 intake manifold, and RL throttle body installed and wired up.

moved all the vacume shit to the fender/head light area. tucked all the vacume lines, HID balast and head light harness.

tore the old one apart just to check it out.

pretty much ready to go back in tomorrow morning.

..i bought those JDM fuel rail covers and havent used them so i think iam going to run those now. just plain black, and i have spare coil packs ill use so no more camo all i have to do is paint the strut bar again. i really wanted to use the RL engine cover since i got one from a fellow member, but idunno now if i feel like making brackets and what not.
well today i got the diff bolted up to the engine and didnt like the way the bolts looked on the bottom, just seemed to be bit close. so ended up shimming them out with a few washers and i feel much better about it. so got that done and got the trans bolted up to the engine and then dropped it back in the bay. ....only thing is i had a major set back and my dumb ass ran the knock sensor harness the wrong way and had the connector going up front. i went to plug it in and was like WTF!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ....so i had to pull the intake off while it was in the car. and then i thought maybe ill just pull it up a bit and get my hand in there and unplug it to swap it around and as soon as i touched it the sensor snapped....so had to pull it all the way out and replace the sensor and reroute the harness. so to all of you guys that do a T2 intake swap.....right on man right on.. damn what a bitch.
soooooooooooooo any way got that squared away and it now sits in the bay with my pollyed engine mounts. just about a half a day of work left. ONE major question. my ecu is with matt as we speak but i have a extra ecu from a 94 GS sedan T2. can i use this ecu just to check and see if the car will start and run to purge the coolant? i know its not a good idea to drive it with that just cause of the higher redline and trans shift points but will it work for what id like to do????


















well got my new axles in today ...figured if they were out i was putting new ones in. got the ecu from a 94 sedan gs put in and all other things buttoned up. ...went to fire it up and what do ya know fired up on the first try...made one hell of a noise from the lifters/valves untill the oil got warm and cycled through. but made me feel so damn happy and proud to have finally got this thing close to the end. just need to get my bumper back on and wheels on. iam getting what seems to be a lean condition at the moment. i mean it has a slight stumble but goes away when i pinch off the return line for the fuel. so iam going to worry about persuing that after i get my chipped ecu back from matt. but runs sooooo smooth. went to put on that factory intake that i got from that cash for clunker car and iam guessing t2's are different or if its just the sedans are different from the t1 coupes. so the box matches up but the tube dont. so i just threw in a bullshit tube with a cone filter on it just to let it idle so dont mind that. also dont mind all the camo stuff that is going as well. but i think in the mean time id like to try and find a factory intake tube from a 91 coupe LS if anyone has one lmk. but i think iam going to mod the silver intake tube to run into the factory air box. iam just over the loud noise with the intake. plus maybe ill be able to get you guys that have asked about my exhaust a decent sound clip. ...well in the first video you can hear how damn loud the valvetrain is and in the second you can here that baby purr....well ill get some move progress later. i have to go to work for real tomorrow so maybe ill make it back over there this weekend maybe. but thanks to everyone that has supported me on this one and everyone that has helped out.....tom,matt,alan,jon,jen,alex,crowing,mike,po ochmike,nick.....i think thats it lol.

well after looking at the engine bay thread.i really wanted to paint my fuel rail covers, coil packs, etc... well i see alot of blue, tons of red...even some yellow. ....i had the green camo on it and didnt think that would look good with the polished valve covers and black intake manifold. ..in then end i decided to rock the urban camo. or snow camo lol. yeah with all this florida snow. but to be honest i really like that pattern but thought id try my hand at painted them black, then tape off some stripes of sorts, then paint them grey, tape off some stripes again then painted them white. after it dried pulled all the tape off and ended up with this.........well enjoy. i think ill rock this for a while i still need to do my coil packs,and wire harness cover. maybe my fuse box covers but iam not sure about this yet i think it might be a bit much. well what do you think???

i have been driving it the past few days on the stock gs rims and holy shit ive lit these bitches up like crazy. this car really feels different now. the low in feel is night and day ..like leaving from a light. plus i still have a T2 intake id like to get around to getting on. but as for now i am SOOOOOOO sorry that i debated selling this car. the only way this car leaves my cold dead hands are if it gets totaled. i fucking love this car even more now. thank you to everyone that helped me out with one thing or another weather it be a place to do the swap or info or mount or ecu. everyone. and the old camo covers yeah hit me up on a shared_pm. well i finally got around to installing my new gauge cluster id still really like to find a jdm one in kph but for now this will work. also got around to painting my GS/T2 calipers and ill get those on later in the week.also need to paint the intake pipe i found a 90 degree pipe to change my short ram into a cold ram. so iam thinking about painting it black?? what is your thought ???? one is chrome and one is primer as of now.ALSO.... went checking out the parts catalog and found a mugen rear view mirrow cover for the fit is all kinda colors so i traded in some transmission fluid for a white one lol. but i have a few more pics but here are a few as of now. ill be posting more later. thanks for lurking....




yeah if...IF i keep it CAI, iam just prolly going to go short ram and even would really like to just put my factory box back on and run the intake tube to the stock box. ...and ill have to get that part number for you.
