Default What parts do you not trust buying used?

So I am finally building an LS Vtec. I have wanted one ever since I drove Daves EG hatch some time ago in a galaxy far away.

Since - as my per usual - this build is on a budget and I've started looking for the parts needed.

As I look I started thinking about the parts I would not want to buy used.

For example, some say buying a slightly used valvetrain is okay but I don't agree.

What do you guys/girls say no to when it comes to used parts?

btw used water and oil pumps are a given. I'm thinking about the performance adders.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

No used transmission, blocks, heads, or longblocks unless they come from a trusted source, with paperwork, and with a good history. That's just items that are too expensive the skimp on.

I learned my lesson with transmissions. So I don't buy any moving shit of here (motor,trans,turbo,ect..) unless is somebody reputable or that I know. But I will try to avoid it regardless. If you can't inspect it internally you're taking a risk.

We have bought a used transmission. Third and fourth gear we grinding so bad, they barely went in. So def. no used trannys unless we know the person.

as for internals, i wouldn't EVER buy used. if on a budget, you can put together a very nice setup with OEM honda parts. which are way cheaper than aftermarket. with so many b series engines types out there, usdm/jdm the options are endless.

usually wear related items. Engine internals I am very hesitant about.

Exactly, no used turbos, trans, swaps, blah blah blah. I would buy a bare block though, only if I was going to bore it.
