F-ing Health Insurance ***RANT WARNING***
Today I find out I need out-patient surgery next Friday. No biggie...nothing major. Call up my health insurance to verify deductible and whatnot. Turns out not only do I pay a $35 copay and a $350 deductible on the procedure...but I also have to pay 15% of the fucking procedure after deductible. WTF is that shit? Guess it is my own damn fault for picking the less expensive of the PPO plans, but jesus christ...it is almost as if I'm paying the whole goddamn procedure out of pocket. What the fuck is the point of having health insurance? Guess I need to reevaluate my healthcare options.

Dude, don't get me started on insurance in general, but health insurance is the worst.
My friend and his wife just had a baby. She is a teacher so she gets her insurance for free through the school system. They had a $300/DAY deductable on their hospital stay which was a week since she had a c-section.
Insurance pisses me off
Good luck with the surgery though man.

Check to see what your maximum out of pocket is per year. It can't go over that (total).
My hospital billl was over $25,000 for 3 days and I was responsible for 10%, but my maximum out of pocket per year is $1,500, so that's what I'll end up paying.

Insurance is not bad.
Think of the risk vs what you're paying and most of the time insurance = worth it. If it wasn't you wouldn't buy it.
As frances said, you most likely have a "maximum" out of pocket limit. Once you know that, you may not stress out as much.

for what insurance costs these days you're better off not having it. If you do have a hospital visit, let them send you to collections for a few years until you file bankruptcy. My last job insurance for my wife and I would have been $150/WEEK!!!!!! I could just set that aside in a savings account and if I didn't get sick go on vacation at the end of the year.

Actually, what you're complaining about is Healthcare costs. If healthcare costs were not so high, your premiums would not need to be so high.
If one does not have insurance and makes the hospital incur the charge of healthcare, who do you think it hurts? The ones with valid insurance. Those of us that don't feel it is right for a hospital to have to charge off our care. They need to eat too, do they not?
That $150/week is nothing when your wife falls down the stairs and incurs brain damage and needs medical care for 5 years until she finally heals enough to feed/take care of herself.
I love how people look at insurance as a bad thing. Insurance is there to give you a "payment" plan for when you need it. It is "insurnace" just as it is called.
I hate people that have the option to buy insurance and "can" afford it but choose not to, only to end up in the hospital and do exactly what you said.... let the hospital have to find ANOTHER way to recieve payment for their services, thus prices are high for those of us responsible enough to have insurance.
It's a fucked up cycle. It's circular. I honestly wish it was "OK" for all hospitals to only treat people without insurance for life threatening illness. Nothing else.
That would help ALOT. My uncle works in the ER of Health Central Hospital over here and says there are more uninsured people taking up his time with bullshit medical issues then anything else. He is actually looking to go to a private hospital so that he won't have to deal with the bullshit.
Welcome to "sharing" the burden. Those of us that "can" pay, definately DO pay.
I still feel that it is cheper to pay my $210/month for my PPO that I have not used except for "checkups", then have to pay the full price of a hospital stay for a major accident if I need it...

We both have insurance so I'm not one of those people who says "fuck it, let them pay for it". But at the time, I simply could not afford to have 1/4 of my take home salary deducted for insurance which I would rarely use and if so, chances are it would not be a huge cost. It is a vicious cycle. If insurance were cheaper, more would have it and less would skip out on their bills. Yes, they have to eat, but I'm not worried about them. Nobody else in this world cares about my wellbeing so if it comes to me having an extra $150/week in my pocket or stiffing them with the bill, that's an easy choice.

Dave - I know what you mean, to those of us who don't have medical problems, it seems we pay more into insurance than we get out of it.
HOWEVER.....I am so happy I have insurance or else I would be stuck with a $25,000+ hospital bill (that I wouldn't really like to have go to collections and mess up my finances for the rest of my life).
You never know what can happen, and to me that is reason enough to pay for insurance. I guess I just luck out that mine is only about $20 a pay period.
