Wolves in the Fold.
So i am guiding a friend back to the interstate cause she doesnt know jack about southside st. pete, and on the way there she keeps wanting to run me but i couldnt go cause i was waiting for the car to warm up. We make it to the interstate and have a little spurt up the on ramp, little 30-80 2nd gear pull, nothing special. but as we get on the interstate a little flock of rice goes flying by at a good 100+ (guessing they were WOT and the wind was holding them back
) i see her take off after them, so i jump and run them down with her. we cant really get around em cause they are taking up the lanes. she goes to the far left, and i go to the far right..we both get around a couple civics and start blowing off at them (she has a turboxs RFL its sick) no one really was accelerating so we sort of made our way through and slowed it down to a 50 roll. the group behind us slowed down and a silverish turbo integra came between me and her. i pulled it down into 2nd, and then i hear her brakeboost. The integra just jumps out without any warning and me and my friend go, by top of 2nd we had reeled in the integra and both put a car or two on it, by top of 3rd it was a bus or two back and i had about 2 or so cars on her and kept it right there. after it was all said and done, we had left the pack way back and i looked down to see i hadnt even turned on the new mod.btw, friend has an s14, like 3" dp/exh, t25@15psi, and i think some HKS cams |

good kills.
that t25 will start blowing hot air at 15psi. usually 14 is the limit, and even then the T25 will drop off to 12psi or so in the higher RPMs due to the stock wastegate. kenny you mentioned "she"...regina's car? who is this mystery girl (i didnt think regina had cams yet)? |

Yeah, you hit a point where after the large initial expense of doing the swap which almost always includes front mount, exhaust, fuel pump, and boost controller, to make any more power is ANOTHER several grand all at once. So most of them get stuck in the ~230 whp range on the stock turbo for quite a while or forever. Then to bide the time until more power, there's suspension, brakes, wheels, which most dsm people don't spend much on but 240 people put a lot of emphasis on. They do have a better chassis for handling, so it makes sense to take advantage of it and have a fun corner-carver, but it's a further delay for straight-line speed. Just a different set of rules to play by on a very different car, and it's why a lot of 240's get stuck somewhere in the 13's with mph's ~105.

why can't a 240 use a datalogger/safc to tune? I assume the safc install is just as simple as ours...but is there no logging software? is there none at all, or just none for free? is there no nissanLink?
are the fast ones running AEM?

There isn't an affordable, useful datalogger. There is a datalogger that for 500 dollars can tell you if your door is open, what state your AC is in, auto tranny computer info, and other worthless crap, and a few useful items like engine rpm, tps, and timing advance, but the interface is not set up to log and display the useful items very well.
Plus, there's no "knock count" as we know it. I don't know the details and don't really care to know them, but from what I've seen in a few nissan rom editing programs there is a normal fuel/timing map, and a knock fuel/timing map, and I guess when knock reaches a certain level, it switches, or maybe it interpolates between the two? Also, I've read that the Nissan knock sensors switch off at WOT and above 4500 rpm, which doesn't make any sense to me. So, even if you could afford a datalogger to read it, one of the main datapoints dsm people use to get feedback on the state of tune doesn't seem to exist. I'm not sure you could get even get an idea of knock from timing advance like you can on 2g's (that is how it works for 2g guys without dsmlink, right?) A lot of people locally have Scott/Enthalpy tune their cars. He has a rom editing program set up and he burns chips for cars based on the tuning mojo he has developed over time. I honestly don't know how you can tune a car to the edge without feedback like knock/timing advance numbers and only with wideband, wideband doesn't tell you when you're hitting the limits of the detonation resistance of your fuel on a unique setup. I'm a noob just starting to work with the tuning capabilities I have through my rom editing stuff (control similar to dsmlink), so I can't speculate about his methods. |
