I can't understand the critics. This is a western about right and wrong, not about the 'good' guys overcoming the 'bad' guys after some necessary and predictable suffering. It is even more exceptional in that an overweight character is not a depraved pervert or a sad figure of fun but a forceful, intelligent, principled and righteous person. I was hoping nevertheless that he would have used his overhearing the statement of a dying (condemned) man to save Ridding from hanging. Thanks for this post.
