Piece by piece, the world's fastest car is being built in a workshop on the outskirts of Bristol, England.

Known as Bloodhound SSC, it has the goal of hitting the heady target of 1,000 miles per hour, and inspiring millions of school children in the process.

Behind the wheel of the arrow-shaped machine is current world land speed record holder and military pilot, Andy Green.

For the first time, he opened the hatch to show us the driver's seat.

The BLOODHOUND Project is an international education initiative focussed around a 1,000 mph jet and rocket powered car. The primary aim is to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by sharing the adventure with the widest possible audience. Over 7000 schools have signed up the use the BLOODHOUND Education Programme in their classrooms.

The vehicle itself is a showcase for high technology design and engineering, utilising both composite materials, metallics and traditional aircraft manufacturing techniques.

The people that built this car also have the advantage of the guys who built Thrust SSC to help them out and advise etc. For those that don't know Thrust SSC currently holds the world record for the highest speed across land....nearly 800mph!!! Broke the sound barrier too!!....across LAND!. Never been done until then. Cars that travel at these speeds need to be as considerately designed as a NASA space shuttle because they have to deal with equal amounts of stress.....on the skin.....the wheels....g forces....so much to consider. When you understand all that you might begin to appreciate just how impressive this car is.
