Dutch cyclist Sebastiaan Bowier has set a new world speed record for a bike, hitting 133.78 kilometres per hour in Nevada, United States. The 26-year-old was riding a recumbent bike built by Delft University of Technology and the VU University Amsterdam, which hit 133.78kph at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge at Battle Mountain.

When the bicycle became popular in the beginning of the 19th century in southern Germany, England, and France, it was the first machine that championed private transportation. Almost 200 years after the invention of the vélocipède and Drais’ dandy horse, personal mobility is one of the highest imperatives in a globalized world. Today, our streets are filled with fixed-gears, roadsters, rickshas, BMX, and electric bikes.

The ​Human Power Team has demonstrated just how fast you can go with pure muscle power. The third model of the Dutch team’s high-tech recumbent bicycle, the VeloX 3, reached a speed of 133.78 km/h, setting a new world record for the fastest pedal-powered vehicle.

We visited the Human Power Team in their workshop in Delft, where lead engineer Dennis Berckmoes, although still in the middle of making the final preparations for their next record attempt, walked us through the details of the engineering process, that he and his colleagues from the student team go through every year, designing a new highs-peed prototype.

All of the components of the VeloX4, from the chassis made of extremely hard but super light carbon, to the aerodynamics that are tested in the wind tunnel of a space center, to the special gear system, to the 3D-printed special parts, are individually designed and produced.

“This is Formula 1 for bicycles,” as Dennis put it.

It should be mentioned here that the record mentioned has been exceeded in this year of 2015 and there is a new "Fastest Bike in the World". The AeroVelo Team from Canada have done what this team did to the old record, blown right past it.These Dutch student teams have helped to really up the record however and are to be congratulated for their good work. Maybe next year they will take it back.

University of Liverpool engineering students are currently working to create the fastest human powered vehicle ever. It's Called the ARION1 Velocipede and it operates like a bicycle, although it looks very different than the typical ones we see.

University of Liverpool engineering students are currently working to create the fastest bike ever. It's Called the ARION1 Velocipede and it operates like a bicycle, although it looks nothing like the ones we typically see.

The University of Liverpool Velocipede Team hopes their invention will smash the world record for the fastest human-powered vehicle that was set in September of 2013. That creation reached a top speed of 83.13 miles per hour.

The crew has a deadline for May 2015 to complete and perfect the project. Then, the ARION1 Velocipede will complete in a race called the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada.

The bicycle will reportedly reach a top speed of 90 miles per hour and will hopefully be 40 times more aerodynamic than a Bugatti Veyron. Those are two very impressive aspects considered it is entirely pedal powered.

The operator will be seated about 5 inches from the ground and will be required to generate 700 watts of human power for the bike to reach the 90 mph mark. The vehicle emits no carbon emissions and it's over 98 percent efficient.

The project leader, Ben Hogan stated "This style of cycling is known as 'recumbent' cycling. The whole bicycle is enclosed in a lightweight carbon fiber shell, giving the vehicle a streamlined shape which allows it to cut through the air more easily."
