will a I6 be able to tow 5-6k without strain?

i'm talking about city and highway speeds?

i need a rig to tow my yota to the mudhole and back without problems...

I would think you'll be fine. Might want to think twice about taking it cross country...but to the mudhole and back I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think it's a question of "can you tow it", it's more of a question, can you stop it?

never seen a 250 with a 6 banger. i think an 150 is rated near that towing weight (i might be super wrong)

what year is the truck in question?

96 was the last year the I6 came in the 150 and i'm not sure what year they stoped with the 250.... my father had a 80's 250 with a I6...

the reason i kinda wanna stay with a I6:

1.gas prices
2.I6's are work horses
3.gas prices
