A starter shim on a Ford? Which would cause a problem like that? I've never seen one on a 302. Of course, I am not too experienced....Only built a couple motors and pulled a few and installed a few....So I still have lots to learn. Please tell me where the shim is placed on a 302 which will put the starter further away from the flexplate/flywheel? I know there is a SPACER which is made which will put the starter further out of the transmission bellhousing, but not further away from the flexplate.
In a cheby, yes...I would almost agree with you....but even then, it is something which would need to be fixed. It should not whine or click upon cranking.

Shimming problem? I don't think so. This is the small portion of the ring gear that was destroyed. You can clearly see two teeth freshly broken (white) and two that had been broken for a while (darker). Also enjoy all the beutiful oil on a brand new bellhousing

Chevy's are notorious for starter whine and needing to be shimmed. But Ford is not immune. I have done a starter on a 84 F150 that had shims and my old 79 Mustang that had an inline 6 had shims on the starter.
And I just did a clutch on an 88 GT a month ago and the flywheel had a shim on the back of it. I didnt argue,.. I put it back on there. But there was indeed a shim.
So pfffft.

Good Greif you all get so pissy. I have no idea who Shaun is. All I have head is that his shop has big money cars in it. Why do you all get so upset when all I said is that I saw Treys car and what was wrong with it. Facts are what they are.

And how do you think it got that way? It just magically broke off by itself? Looks like the starter had been eating at that flywheel for a while. I'm not saying a shim would have prevented it,.. but there is nothing to say that shimming it would not either. Either way its an easy fix and all this is really uncalled for.
