All this talk about cutting springs being bad is just crap.Cutting springs can be done right, and at times has been even recommended by people like hotchkis, fred phun, caroll smith... (Look them up if you don't know who they are). If you know what you're doing it can be done right with very good results. What you need to understand is how cutting springs affects spring rate and keep that in mind when you cut them. You have to keep spring rates in a reasonable range and a reasonable front to rear ratio. If you cut the springs too much you raise the spring rate too high and you get a redicuous bumpy ride (to take advantage of higher rates you really need higher rate shocks...). Worse, if you increase the front rate too much relative to the rear you get a car that understeers (safe but slow), and if you increase the rear rate too much relative to the front you get a car that oversteers (fast but DANGEROUS, you screw up with this car and it will be tail happy which is very hard to control and will at some point cause an accident, and if you've done it and think it fees fine, get a real road racer or autox'er to take you out in it and show you where the problem is). Most cars have stiffer spring rates in the front (to support the engine...), and typically they have more coils made of much thicker wire. The more coils you have the less change you get in rate when you cut one off, but the change in height is dependent on coil spacing, suspension geometry and weight on the suspension (on most cars cutting the front coils changes height more than the back)For example, On 3rd and 4th gen f-bodies that means that cutting coils off the front will increase spring rate less than cutting coils off the back, and they both want significantly higher rates in the front, and in both cases you don't really want to go over around 200# in the back unless you have VERY stiff springs in the front. On 3rd gens with performance suspensions in them from the factory (TA, GTA, WS6, Z28, Iroc...), that means that you can cut a coil or more off of the front (a coil will get your spring rate into the high 700's) and < a coil in the back. If you re-install them like that the fronts will be too low (practically sitting on the bump stops) and the backs will be too high. The quick and easy solution is that the springs are the same diameter so you can swap the thick rear spring isolators to the front and use the fronts or some hose in the back. You end up with a stance somewhat like eibach sportlines (with the back a little higher, sportlines tend to sit too low in the back) and spring rates/ride very close to eibach pro springs, but in a way better- eibach springs have progressive rate springs in the back which can be more comfortable on the road, but are a compromise in a truly handling situation and can bottom, where the stock springs are specific rate.
