I finally got my license! Here are some tips and tricks I learned that helped me pass my road test. Hopefully you can learn something form this too. =]

Of course, the best method of learning is to actually drive and practice for yourself--every car and driver is different, so you have to learn to control the vehicle you are in to maximize your potential to pass your road test.

CARS - If possible, try to use the car you practice in for your road test (many schools allow it). Not only does it save you money, but you will be more confident because you know the feel of the car and how to properly control it. It is also good to learn different types of vehicles so that you are more versatile. I drove 3 different vehicles prior to my test.

PRACTICE - From the time I got my permit back in 2009 to the day of my road test, I've had approximately 4 hours total driving practice. 30-50 hours of driving is generally recommended for maximum learning experience and confidence. You can learn basics in 4 hours, but you won't necessarily do them correctly every time. Practice!

SPEED - Be aware of your driving speed! Driving too slowly is just as bad as speeding--during your practice, keep track of your speed and how it feels as you drive so you don't end up watching your speedometer too often. Keep your speed between 15-20 mph, or the appropriate state speed where you're from.

OBSERVE - Don't spend too much time looking around! Keep a target in front of you and follow it as you drive. You'll be more focused and avoid crossing lanes subconsciously. Give yourself 5 seconds or so to observe your mirrors and blind spot, then return your focus to the road.

CHECKLIST - The simplest things can easily be forgotten once you start your road test! It's normal. :] Keep a mental checklist of things to do every time you are about to start driving: adjust mirrors, drivers seat, seat belt, etc. If it helps, do it in a certain order every time. Make it a habit!

DRIVING - Never allow yourself to slack off while practicing, because you will definitely mess up on your test. Always signal, always do a proper U-turn, always park properly, etc.

A preview of the Utah Driver License Division skills test maneuvers to assist Utah drivers in obtaining a learner permit or driver license. This video was filmed on our driving range at the West Valley Driver License Office with no other testers on the range at the same time. This is the only driving range that you can be tested on, in the State of Utah. All other offices test on the actual roadway.
