[h=2]WRC: Ogier ends drought with Rally Germany victory[/h]

Sunday, 21 August 2016

RACER Staff
Sebastien Ogier ended a World Rally Championship win drought stretching back six months by controlling the final stages of Rally Germany.
The WRC champion had opened his latest title defence with Monte Carlo and Sweden victories, but then endured months of frustrated fury over the running order regulations that left him first on the road on the subsequent gravel rallies.
The series' return to asphalt for Germany was always expected to be Ogier's chance to get back on top and he duly delivered.
He had to overcome Volkswagen teammate Andreas Mikkelsen first, the Norwegian leading through Friday as Ogier dropped a little time with small errors and less-than-ideal tire choices.
But a blistering run on the famous Panzerplatte stage on Saturday morning allowed Ogier to break free.
Ogier was the only VW driver on the podium in the champion team's home event and its last before its motorsport boss Jost Capito leaves for the McLaren Formula 1 team.
Jari-Matti Latvala's rally was effectively over immediately due to gearbox damage on Friday's opener, though he rejoined under Rally2 and scored a couple of powerstage bonus points, and Mikkelsen was pushed back to fourth as the Hyundais made a late charge.
Dani Sordo and Thierry Neuville both overcame Mikkelsen with Sunday morning stage wins, leaving the trio covered by just 4.1 seconds as they went onto the deciding powerstage.
A wild stage from Mikkelsen included several moments and ended with his debris-filled left rear wheel on fire and his brakes used up.
That left the fight down to the Hyundais, and though Neuville was fastest on the powerstage a delighted Sordo was able to hang onto second place overall ahead of his teammate by just 0.1s.
The result was Sordo's first podium of 2016 and his best finish since taking second behind Neuville in Hyundai's breakthrough one-two on this event two years ago.
Third Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon tumbled down the order on Friday with a puncture and a wild moment that he was lucky to prevent turning into a huge crash.

He recovered from eighth to fifth ahead of Mads Ostberg, helped by Ott Tanak losing a comfortable fifth place to a Saturday alternator failure.
M-Sport also lost Eric Camilli early on, the Frenchman crashing on the first stage of what the team expected to be his strongest rally of the year.
The most dramatic retirement was a violent high-speed crash for Stephane Lefebvre on Panzerplatte. The incident halted the rally and sent both Lefebvre and co-driver Gabin Moreau to hospital with multiple injuries.
Until then, the Citroen protege had been running sixth, his privately-arranged PH Sport entry the only DS 3 WRC presence on this event.
The World Rally Car attrition allowed Esapekka Lappi to finish seventh in his WRC2-winning Skoda.
Lappi took control of the class on Saturday after overcoming early leader Armin Kremer. His factory Skoda teammate Pontus Tidemand was close behind but chose not to register for class points on this rally.
Newly-crowned British Rally champion Elfyn Evans still leads WRC2, but has already completed six of the seven rounds drivers are allowed to nominate under the scoring system.
Main rivals Teemu Suninen, Lappi and Nicolas Fuchs all have two rallies to go and Tidemand three.

[h=2]WORLD RX: Loeb gets home podium, Kristoffersson wins[/h]

[h=2]WORLD RX: Loeb gets home podium, Kristoffersson wins[/h] RACER staff
Loheac World Rallycross 2016

Johan Kristoffersson dominated the Loheac World Rallycross final as Sebastien Loeb secured a home podium with a last-lap move on long-time World Rally rival Petter Solberg.
While Kristoffersson was unchallenged from pole on the way to the Volkswagen Sweden team's first win of 2016, the fight for second was intense throughout.
Works Peugeot driver Loeb pounced on Solberg and Ken Block's Monster teammate Andreas Bakkerud as they battled for second on lap one, before Bakkerud and Loeb jostled when Solberg took an early joker lap.
Block – who had spent his semi final engaged in a ferocious dice with Loeb – left his joker late and headed Bakkerud, Solberg and Loeb for a spell before releasing them when he finally headed for the alternative route.
While Kristoffersson streaked clear and Bakkerud cemented second, Loeb delighted the home crowd by making a move on Solberg stick at the hairpin on the final lap.
Block went out with broken suspension on the last lap after a collision with Reinis Nitiss, who made the final for the first time this year in what will be his last start in the Munnich Motorsport team's SEAT.
Solberg had lost the championship lead to Mattias Ekstrom when the DTM star headed the intermediate classification. But Ekstrom failed to make the final after losing places to Solberg and Nitis

WRC: Competitive debut for Hyundai R5 in Corsica
RACER staff
Hyundai's i20 R5 will break competitive cover on the Tour de Corse at the end of the month, with three cars contesting the French island event.
Hyundai factory crew Kevin Abbring and Seb Marshall will drive the Korean firm's R5, having completed around 3000 miles of development running in the car. Hyundai's Customer Racing department will travel to Bastia to support a further two private R5s for Stephane Sarrazin and Fabio Andolfi.
Sarrazin is no stranger to success on the island, finishing third in a Mini in 2013 and winning the event a year later, both times when it was running as a round of the European Rally Championship.
Abbring, who ran second in an i20 WRC at the end of day one in 2015, said: "It will be great to finally drive the New Generation i20 R5 directly against the competition. We've been testing since January and it's all been building up to this point, so to be part of the car's WRC2 debut is a great way for us to celebrate our achievement in reaching this point in the project.
"We know we have a strong package for tarmac, but Corsica is one of the toughest rallies of the season. While it would obviously be great for me to come away with a strong result, the weekend will be all about the team and the i20 R5."

Hyundai Motorsport team principal Michel Nandan added: "With the competitive debut of the new generation i20 R5 this year's Tour de Corse-Rallye de France will be the biggest event in the history of Hyundai Motorsport.
"The foundation of the customer racing department was an important expansion for the company, and we will have an unprecedented six Hyundai Motorsport-built entries at the start of the rally. For the first time we will compete with a car other than our WRC challenger.
"In taking on the R5 category and the WRC2 championship we have targeted one of the most competitive areas of modern motorsport. Due to the tight deadlines which have been a constant part of this project we are still awaiting final confirmation of the car's homologation for competition from the FIA. However, with preparations in the workshop well advanced the New Generation i20 R5 should be ready to compete in France."
Abbring drove the i20 R5 as a course car at the European Rally Championship Ypres Rally in June and, while the car didn't register for times officially, the Dutchman would have been quickest on several stages against ERC competition.

Testing Gabby Chavez
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dVnekFwjZY

F4 U.S.: IndyCar veteran Chaves enlisted to help GMV Motorsports

As the Formula 4 United States Championship Powered by Honda points race narrows, teams are deploying all of their resources to make their cars faster.
GMV Motorsports, co-owned by five-time IndyCar winner and ESPN on ABC color analyst Scott Goodyear, three-time Indy 500 starter Dr. Jack Miller, and four-time Super Bowl champion and Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri, invited 2015 IndyCar Rookie of the Year Gabby Chaves to test their two F4 U.S. cars at Gingerman Raceway in South Haven, Michigan, before the championship's penultimate race of the season.
"It's a fantastic race car for the young guys making that first step from karting to the open-wheel category," Chaves said. "The F4 car has just the right amount of power, it's quick in a straight line, has great braking force and has just enough aerodynamics to get the drivers a taste of what it takes to drive a proper race car. The Honda engine performed flawlessly all day. It was a blast to drive."
Chaves, 23, analyzed the two F4 U.S. cars behind the wheel over the two-day period, working with GMV Motorsports engineers to create the ultimate setup for the next F4 U.S. event at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, on Sept. 16-18.
"Having Gabby test with us really helped us as a team," Miller said. "He jumped in the car and within two laps knew exactly what the car was doing. He gave us feedback that allowed us to make the car about second and a half faster. We are looking forward to Atlanta."
Chaves, a two-time Indianapolis 500 starter, also worked side-by-side with F4 U.S. Championship driver Austin Kaszuba of Burleson, Texas, and up-and-coming GMV Motorsports F4 U.S. driver Jack William Miller of Westfield, Indiana, to improve their driving skills and comfort with the car.
"Testing with Gabby was awesome," Kaszuba said. "It's amazing how much you can learn from somebody who already went through the ranks and has a lot of experience with cars. Gabby gave me a lot of advice throughout the session. I feel like I have already improved just by working with him this weekend."
Michael Goodyear of Carmel, Indiana, the pilot of GMV Motorsports' No. 4 car, was unable to attend because his college schedule conflicted with the team test. Goodyear has entered to compete at Road Atlanta.
"I was disappointed to miss the New Jersey F4 race event and team test with Gabby, but the agreement with my parents is that school comes first." Goodyear said. "I am beyond excited to participate in Event 4 of the F4 U.S. Championship at Road Atlanta with the new car set-up. I would like to thank Jack Miller, my dad Scott Goodyear, Gabby Chaves, the entire GMV Motorsports team and all my sponsors for their support. I can't wait to hear that Honda engine roar again!"
GMV Motorsports will put its adjustments to the test starting this Friday at Road Atlanta as they try to edge out their competition. Kaszuba stands 11th in championship points and his teammate Goodyear is right behind him in 13th. F4 U.S. Championship competitors need to place in the top seven to earn super license points through the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA).

Florida International Rally & Motorsport Park

RallyX at The FIRM is a new off road racing series that will consist of timed race laps on a 80/20 off-road to tarmac race course. The drivers have to navigate through a challenging course to compete for the quickest lap times which means fast driving and plenty of sideways sliding. The lap times are added up at the end of the day for a total time and those times are what decide the results. The course will use dirt roads and sections of our professional road course to add up to around 2.3 mile race circuit. Each lap is usually around 3 minutes which gives the drivers plenty of time to push their skills to the test.
