Don Garlits' garage next to his two racing museums doesn't collect much dust these days. That's because the famed drag racer, who looks about 60 but says he's well on his way to 78, can't stop turning wrenches.

He's been doing so for more than 50 years, after the then-young Tampa accountant walked away from a white-collar career to work at an auto body shop. He lost his girlfriend at the time, he said, but has since gained everything he ever wanted.
Judging from the new Dodge Challenger race car Garlits spends his days tweaking, all that the man voted the greatest drag racer of all time by the National Hot Rod Association wants to do now is keep racing.
"I ran [the prototype] last summer," said Garlits, known to fans as "Big Daddy." "I liked it so much, I wanted to get the first production model and go race with it."
So Dodge and Mopar gave Garlits the first of 13 2009 Dodge Challengers with a drag race package. The car Garlits received was pretty bare and open to interpretation, just like he wanted.
"We were left with a rolling chassis and our imagination," Garlits said, staring at the all-white car that sat on jack stands on a recent day. "There's a lot of work to be done with it."
Garlits said most of the parts for the car will be built in-house, much of it on the same equipment that engineered some of the most iconic dragsters - Garlits named most of them Swamp Rats - of all time.
He plans to rework the suspension, make custom exhaust and headers and move the engine. As for the engine, it's a 6.1-liter V-8 that pumps out around 600 horsepower.
"I may have a better engine than the one those boys put in it," Garlits said.

Finding extra speed has never been a problem for Garlits. His Swamp Rats were the first in the NHRA to go over 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, 260 and 270 mph. His 30th Swamp Rat dragster resides in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C.
Big Daddy retired from the sport in 1992, but returned to run a quarter-mile at 319 mph when he was 71.
"That's why I am who I am," he said. "You could never have done any of this as an accountant."
Garlits hopes he will make new memories when he takes his new car to the race track. Dodge officials say the Challenger could be fit to run in a few different stock-level divisions.
In the meantime, Garlits goes to several races and drag strips throughout the year as a Dodge spokesman, occasionally creating a cloud of smoke by doing a burnout with the rear tires on his 1968 Swamp Rat. It's all part of his quarter-mile commute, which he has no plans on quitting any time soon.
"If anything, racing has kept me young," he said. "I've loved every minute of it."
