GET SOME
I don't see how a 351 is easier, with a heavier rotating assembly, bigger mains, and also the added weight of the block.
To the OP, if you keep it N/A do an early model block, keep the ratating assembly fairly light. Put the heads you have in the hands of the right person, an off the shelf hydraulic roller, change the intake. Keep it out of detonation, don't spin it to the moon and it will live and make 500whp.

With a HP goal of 500hp I'll take the larger (stronger) mains, the heavier (stronger again) rotating assembly and heavier (yes stronger) block over the 302 block any day of the week. The 302 will need to spin to the moon to make 500hp NA. 15 yrs ago my father inlaws 327 (Chevy) spun 9000 to make an honest 500hp NA. I had a nice 306 combo in my 93 with AFR 185 heads and its hard enough to make 400hp out of them. The only way I could see another 100hp would be using a race only cam and spinning another 2000 RPM. And even then,.. a 306 wont have the torque the 351 will. 408 - 427 will make 500hp NA easier than a 306 will and probably for a lot less money. How long will a 302 block live at 500hp NA spinning those kinds of RPM's?
There are guys using stock 351 rotating assemblies making 600 - 650hp. Thats not going to happen with a 302 based engine.

I would have to agree cubic inches is always easier. another car I had, like hers, 69 Camaro 400 SBC NA, street tires thru exhaust, 10's. Back in 88-89. 500 hp, nope more around lil over 400 If your trying to be like her then you dont need 500 ponies now if its just a magic number you want then thats different.

You only need 400 - 425hp to trap 122 mph in a 3000 - 3200lb car.
And would you honestly call a motor making power at 8000 RPM a 'streetable' combo? A 351 block using a cheap $1500 408ci rotating assembly with mediocre heads and an F cam will make 380 - 400 HP and over 400ft/lb torq.
Not putting your combo down. 122mph out of a 306 is pretty damn stout. Mine only trapped 110/112 with a 3600lb race weight. But to deny the cubic inch rule of thumb is like the ricers falling back on the whole hp per liter BS.

All I know is you don't need 400C.I. to make 500hp, Hurst I agree with alot you say on these boards but not on this. I have been 132mph with junk (and was more in it), drove the car all over for a year and a half, and you're saying with 40 more C.I. that it can't be done? The fact is most people put a combo together and if it don't run what they want they build something bigger, because it's the easy way to go instead of figuring out how to go fast with something smaller, and it's alot more impressive when they do, IMO.

Yep, but it will be under 347 CI, and if it don't make 500hp on pump gas I will burn it to the ground!!!!

I never said it cant be done. Where did I say that?
I only said its not as easy as it appears using the other 2 guys as a basis.
