So I ran into a question while pondering the engine setback for the ride. As I looked at the firewall/trans tunnel I wondered why the engine is offset to the passenger side. I posted this question on several Mustang forums and no one had a definite answer. In fact only two forums had any response at all (this one had some of course).
I dug around the web and really didn't come up with much.
Then I thought why not search on the HAMB, those guys are true hotrodders. Sure enough I found a thread with information on engine offsets. Of course it wasn't Mustang specific but it did show why engines are offset.
Here are some the links if anyone ever pondered this puzzling question (or am I the only one with nothing else to do?).

I was told along time ago ...that the engines are offset due to help distribute weight better because when you are in your car you are mostly by yourself.soo they set the motor to the pass side a little ...

John that makes sense.
Speaking of engine placement, how about this? Check out his arm in the picture with the Cougar.

Cammo sounds pretty cool Rob.
I need to make a good plan before I cut the firewall. I'm trying to figure out if I want to go with engine plates or some type of engine mount setup. I have a empty 429 block on line for mock up.
I was thinking of cutting this area right along the "frame". Then subframe it for the trans mounts to be moved back and torque arm mount. The torque arm mount is going to be a factor on how far I can move the drivetrain back.

I've never looked at one like that, man, there just isn't much to them...
When i did the engine plates in my rambler i had to redo the trans tunnel just so it would fit. As long as you use the same type metal (or stronger) and box it all back in, it will be strong. I would make your own thru-floor frame connectors as far forward and back as poss. Then tie the engine plate to that, use front, mid and a tranny mount and you'll be fine.
cool stuff

I'd def put in a cage/ rollbar and subframe connectors BEFORE cutting into that firewall or the car may fold up, especially on a rotissiere (spl)
you know, a shorty 'glide might work right there.
and I was thinking that you may only need ot move it backa few inches, not a few feet.Last edited by blacksheep-1; 12-04-2009 at 09:32 PM.

all that is not necessary if he's not ready for that stage... some simple braces welded in will do just fine.
i like where your thinking about this, why not move the rear back too and straight axle the front on leafs....would be so awesome.

Eric, I would definately do some through floor frame connectors and put them in before you cut that much floor/firewall out.....
