It can last forever if you never touched your car, haha, but the main source of swirling in your paint is actually from you washing it or wiping it down. There are some preventative measures you can take that I teach my customers when I deliver the car to help them maintain the finish.

what is actually used in the 3-step as compared to the 1-step? a rubbing compound/polish/wax for the 3-step? does this actually correct the flaws in the paint or just fill them in with the poilish/compund/etc?

I use whatever needs to be used to remove the defects, sometimes you dont need to use a compound and only a mildly abrasive polish, every car is different. The work I do REMOVES the flaws. You should know that by now!
