i7 Vs. phenom II x6
so im building my desktop soon with an ASUS sabertooth 990fx and im up in the air on the processor. of course i want the Intel i7 2700K or higher, but those are only 4/8 core at 3.5GHz and about $300-$350. now if i go AMD Phenom II x6 1090T i get a true six core at 3.2GHz and its just under $300. both are pretty good processors imo and reasonably priced, but i wanted to get TR's opinion. should i go with the x6 thats slightly less expensive, can be clocked faster, and a true 6 core, or should i go hyper threaded i7 for the extra price. how much more speed will i get with a true 6 core over a hyper threaded sandy bridge E? if i recall correctly it should be 3.5GHz or 3.2GHz per pair of processors, so if i get the true six core, is it faster?
i will be pairing this up with either 12gb or 16gb of kingston DDR3 1600 RAM, 1TB or 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm HDD, GTX570, and a 700w 40c constant power supply. im getting ready for the syndicate release feb. 21st, any suggestions?__________________

AMD is so far behind the curb now in technology... stick with Intel. The i7 is a rock-solid processor and will kick that Phenom's ass.

Intel. Nothing slows down like an AMD.

AMD has been handed it's ass multiple times over as of late. This isn't even a question. i7 all the way.

thats what i thought. i just didnt know if the true six core was faster. they're both AM3 sockets and theyre about the same speed, and close to the same price, but one is six core and the other is a sandy bridge E 4/8. i guess no one has had a good experience with AMD, lol.
edit: i am fucking stupid, the i7 is not AM3, its LGA 2011. this couldve turned out bad lol.
what about the rest of the set up, does anyone see a problem with compatibility? i was originally thinking about buying a computer with an asus motherboard and just upgrading the power source, gfx card, and ram, but i dont know of any asus computers with 4 ram slots. how the hell do i find out what computer has what motherboard? anyone know any good sites?Last edited by rotarykidd; 01-18-2012 at 01:11 PM.

ASUS has a history of failing over time (I've owned 3 boards so far) so I'd go with Gigabyte.

i do love gigabyte, but its always been MSI and ASUS for me. all 3 have failed on you? in what time period and what boards were they?

Yes, two boards have completely failed (no POST). And components on the third failed (Ethernet, Front USB).
This is throughout the last decade.

i use AMD and dont have any problems and i run all my games on highest settings fine at 60 FPS or more and only have 4 GB of RAM. dont see why everyone thinks they need like a I14 running at like 17.3GHz with 32 GB of RAM..... not sayin theres anything wrong with intel though. the I7's are nice and all but realistically.........

I'd go with the Intel. If I read your post right you're just going to be gaming, you don't need 6 cores and you don't need hyperthreading for that, so just get an i5-2500k for $180. No games take advantage of 6 cores, they'll all bound by how fast your graphics card is. Also despite what others might say Asus is pretty much the #1 motherboard maker when it comes to reliablity and features.
EDIT: BTW all of the Intel CPUs you're talking about are LGA1155, not LGA2011, so you'll want to look for an LGA1155 motherboard. There are only two LGA2011 CPUs out right now, the $599 six core i7-3930k and the $999 six core i7-3960X.Last edited by jdk; 01-18-2012 at 03:27 PM.

i left out that i will be usuing this computer for music production and recording guitar as well as heavy gaming like crysis, deadspace, syndicate, and battlefield. i have my focusrite saffire 6 usb midi interface and both fruity loops 10 and ableton live 8. i want this computer to laugh at recording on ableton and have syndicate and crysis on full without so much as a sneeze.
i thought about the 2600k i7 as well. i found a lenovo with an i7 2600k and what i assume to be an asus motherboard and p67 chipset that i would just mod, but i need to know what chipset and how many ram slots it has. i dont want to run two 8gb because one, thats a little more than i want, and two, its fucking expensive! i was planning on 2x 4gb and 2x 2gb, so i need to make sure i can do that. of course stores wont let you open them, for reasons im not quite sure. i'll set the bitch on fire if i crack it open and it has only two ram slots...__________________
