Oh, and be prepared to spend almost as much on a good scope as you do on the rifle itself.
You can get a shot off of 500 yards (4 football field lengths) with military 5.56 aka civilian .223 ammunition... Marines do it every year at the rifle range with Iron Sights to qualify for their marksmanship.

It just takes a little skill.

But isn't .308 the civilian version of the military 7.62 ammunition?

If that's the case I thought that it had more punch but a lot less range then 5.56 aka .223?

Please correct me, if I'm wrong. I only have shot US military weapons and I am not familiar with everything out there.

.308 is a 7.62x51mm round. Ak uses 7.62x49mm I believe, and nogants use 7.62x54mm. The .308 is one of the best "common" rounds, in my opinion. It will continue flight further than a .223

I own an AR-15, I know its capabilities. The 5.56NATO/.223Rem round at 500yards isn't dropping much of anything. Hell, it ain't dropping much of anything at 400 either. Might drop something at 300. The 5.56NATO/.223Rem round relies on velocities over 3000fps to inflict maximum damage via a temporary wound cavity, or relies on high velocities to fragment inside its target to inflict maximum damage. At such long ranges its velocity it so drastically reduced by the time it hits its target that it really isn't too much more dangerous than a .22LR round.

A .308, on the other hand, has mass and velocity behind it, and it renowned for being straight-flying and long range. There is a reason you don't see hunters using .223/5.56NATO. As tacticool as it may be to squeal over your 'assault rifle', it really doesn't fit the bill for hunting meium/large game at a distance.

Remember, matching the round to the target is as important as range. Large game needs a larger round. Unless you got off a perfect shot all a 5.56/.223 is gonna do to an elk is scare it. Or worse it runs off wounded most likely farther than you will be willing to chase. Id stick with a .308, 7.62, or 30-06. My step father used to hunt elk in colorado with a 30-06.

Ahhh, I see. I didn't keep in mind that the strength of impact at the end in hunting counts as well. I was just thinking of getting the round on target at long range. lol Please excuse me It might work for killing people with a well placed shot but much harder for bigger animals and etc! Noted!

I got to watch more hunting tv!

The .30-06 Springfield has a long history, and has been and still is among the favorite all around big game caliber.
For the hunter who will hunt everything from deer to moose or even the prarie dog, the .30-06 is by far a great choice.
You get a range of bullet weights from the 110-grain bullet to the 220-grain bullet.
Loaded with the 180-grain bullet, the .30-06 will retain over 1,300 ft/lbs of energy at 400 yards.
That is plenty to knock an Elk off it's feet. Although the bullet drop at at that range is nearly 50 inches.

The .308 Winchester has the bullet speed and weight that closely matches the .30-06 at shorter ranges.
Many Elk hunters like the .308 for shots that will be at 200 yards or less. Beyond that, the bullet drop will begin to pose problems.
In the .308 Winchester, a 180-grain bullet will retain over 1,200 ft/lbs of energy at 400 yards but will have dropped some 52 inches.
....not mine words but its from a gun forum im on.. guy asked the same question, imo nothing smaller then a 308 will due as long as u pick ur bullets out right and shoot the gun alot.

If you plan on elk or bigger, I would go with a 300 ultra or weatherby. Trust, im 33 and have been hunting since 7 years old. You will love the 300.

Even though the Remington 700 is "free floating", look into glass bedding. It will help with your grouping. The VTR isn't a bad peice, but it's a pretty drastic price change without having much to back it.
