Remington 700 would be my choice.

If you want to hunt elk, Fuck a 30/6 and forget about that 30/30
You can get rem 300 Ultra mag for 300ish, add a little more for the scope. Or find a nice 7mm. Anyone telling you to use a 223 for elk is fos. 7mm is the smallest I ever felt comfortable hunting elk with. You can not go wrong with the 300 ultra.Last edited by byondevl; 11-29-2009 at 12:23 PM.

Only problem with those footlong rounds is the price
My friend had a 7mm and the cartridge on that thing had to be 5" long

If you're shooting the distances you're posting about then all this nonsense about a 30-06, or .223, or any of that crap is just crap. You need the distance and precision of a .308.
Oh, and be prepared to spend almost as much on a good scope as you do on the rifle itself.

I've gotta learn more about these ups and downs before i can pick one. im pretty sure i dont mind spending a little more than $350 at this point to get something .308, the tikka T3 lite looks like a damn good gun for the money.
Tikka T3 Lite Rifle

If you don't mind spending medium amounts of money, get the Remington 700 in .308. You'll be looking at around $300 for a lost cost quality scope (bushnell 3200 or equivilent leupold). There is a lot to learn about scopes and ballistics. I learned to read mil dot scopes and they are extremely helpful and information. Snipercentral is a good website with a lot of scope reviews
