USPS shipping sucks
i had a package sent to me priority mail on 07/11 and it is still yet to arrive. it should have been here in 2-3 days, its been 13. the tracking system they use really sucks. they have no way of tracking it when its in route to the post office. noone knows where my package is at. the post office who sent it has done an investigation for me, proved it was sent and verified the address. my post office has done an investigation and they havent recieved it. this package is worth over $500!!!!!! it is insured but its the pain in the ass to deal with it and i also have to wait for it to be lost for 30 days before filing a claim. now i just have to sit back and wait for it finally show up, get sent back to the original person who mailed it, or wait the time to file the claim. what the hell is the point of having a tracking system that cant track anything? they can only tell when its been dropped off at the post office and when it arrives at the delivery post office. other than that, they dont know where its at. i have never had a package lost before and of course it had to be an expensive package. it couldnt be something worth little $$$
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I'm currently having the same problem man. I ordered three packages from 3 separate vendors who were using USPS. All priority mail. Not one package has arrived! I check out all of the tracking numbers...two say they were "delivered", one says that a "slip was left" and would deliver again... But I had no packages and no slips. I called the USPS hotline, and of course, they were useless, saying they couldn't do ANYTHING if the system said it was delivered. I went to the post office to file claims, and they said only the senders can file claims. I called the senders and they attempted to file claims, only to be told that no claims could be filed because the system has the packages as "delivered". So I'm out $200, right?
Wrong, two days ago, I get phone calls from the vendors saying that the packages were returned to them with "UNDELIVERABLE ADDRESS" over the package. WTF, I get mail EVERY DAY, I've never had a missing bill or anything, but now I have an UNDELIVERABLE address? And there ain't shit I can do. I had to fork up the money for shipping and have it sent to work. Be in constant contact with the seller, as they sometimes get the package back but choose not to inform you. |

I've had more than a couple things 'lost' by UPS, and its no picnic either. You'll check the tracking, and it just keeps saying 'status updated' and moves the expected delivery date one day. After about 5 days of that, you can start the ball rolling.
UPS usually insists that the sender start the investigation. Its not always easy to get the sender to do that. UPS then asks them clever questions like 'what did the package look like?' If the sender doesn't know, ups says that 'lack of information has slowed the process down' like its somehow the senders fault for not memorizing or photographing the box. Finally, after completing their investigation, sometimes as much as a week later, they will pay the senders claim, after which, you have to collect from the sender. If its a business, like a distributor, this usually means they send the items again. If its an individual, or the item was unique (used part, for example) they get a check from UPS, and then pay you, hopefully. I had several packages go lost like this, when I had my shop in Oldsmar. One day, I was talking to a couple of drivers, and asked them what they thought. They both just smiled. Seems that if a package, say, gets its label torn off, and therefore can't be delivered or returned, it gets thrown in a cage, awaiting disposition. After they sit unclaimed for a while, they are 'disposed of', which SOMEHOW causes them to end up in the hands of employees. It also seems that packages from known electronics distributors are more likely to have labels accidentally torn off than others. Again, this is heresay...I have no proof. Unfortunately, its the law of averages...all of these shippers really are pretty good, when you look at lost packages as a whole. It just sucks when it happens to you. Lately, I've had another gripe about the USPS. I guess each branch has financial goals to meet. The local Lincolnshire PO up here has really started pushing the upsell. I went to mail something the other day, and just wanted to make sure I had enough postage (big envelope). It was going about 20 miles up the road. The lady says 'Express mail, right?'...I thought she was kidding, but she wasn't. No, regular mail is fine. 'but express will get it there tomorrow'. Nope, not in a big hurry. 'Ok, so Priority mail?'. Nope, just regular old first class mail. 'need tracking or signature'...you get the idea. |

I also just remembered a great Fed Ex story.
I had a customer who needed a wheel, to replace one that had cracked. Distributor is in Ft. Lauderdale, so its one day by Fed Ex ground. Next morning, no wheel. Call distributor for tracking number, then call Fed Ex. Seems that the guy who shipped the wheel shipped it 'fed ex 3 day' for some reason, and when you do that, fed ex won't deliver any sooner than 3 days. I wish I was kidding. Fed ex said that my wheel was on a trailer, in Tampa, that wouldn't even be opened until the day they would deliver it...two days later. Amazing... Toby |

I ordered a little $20 part for my car on ebay. It was a 2" round piece of metal, basically, and the seller shipped it out through USPS in a small yellow packing envelope. Should have taken 2-3 days. The only tracking info was "electronic shipping info received". Well, a week later I contact the seller asking why I hadn't gotten it yet, making sure he had actually shipped it. His response was confusing and a bit shady and made me suspect he hadn't shipped it out in the first place, but he said he'd send another one. I got another tracking number from USPS and the only tracking info it ever showed was "electronic shipping info received." Three days later I got it and figured the guy had just forgotten to send the first one but since I had my part I was happy.
A month and a half later another small envelope identical to the one with the part showed up in the mail. At first I had no idea what it was but when I opened it there was another part staring me in the face. The postal service somehow lost this package for almost two months before delivering it to me. I'm not the only one, as a couple of people on a webforum had similar delays in getting their parts from this guy. I don't know if the USPS just hates him or if there was something wrong with the way he was labeling and packaging stuff. |

I've never had a problem with USPS Priority mail yet. In fact, when I used to sell on Ebay, I used them ONLY because they were faster than UPS or Fed-Ex, and they never broke any of the glass I sent while I had three or four through UPS arrive broken. Yeah, the tracking sucks though.

i havent personally had a problem with ups but i have noticed theres been a lot of ups positions open lately and also, they delivered a package to us at 8pm last night so i'm thinking they may be a little understaffed right now.
edit: also, we saw a ups truck w/large box trailer in tow. Last edited by Sabotage : 07-23-2008 at 11:06 PM. |
