The second number is dependent on the first. A 255/40/17 and 225/40/17 would both have two different profiles. If possible it's best to keep all the tires the same width. I thought you had 225's on it and were just replacing those. 255 is an awkward tire size. Another reason I was suggesting to stick with the same name brand, is that some companies have different specs. A 255 in Nitto may actually be more narrow than a 245 in Yokohama, for example.

If you do get the 225's though, you need a 45 series to be similar in profile.

Tire width is in mm. Convert to inches (divide by 25.4), and multiply by series number.
255/40/17 = 4.02" sidewall
225/45/17 = 3.99" sidewall
225/50/17 = 4.43" sidewall

What do i do? I need 2 tire for the rear.
Stock is 235 / 45 17 but obviously we are way off.

That's all kinds of fucked up. The best bet for finding a large array of tires, stick with either 225 or 245's, it's up to you. I would either stick with the 225/50/17, and have that 4.43" sidewall, then try to keep the tires as evenly worn as possible and save up. For the next tire change, just do it right and do all matching brands and sizes. The taller the side wall, the more flex you will get (good for traction) and the more cushion you will have against bumps. Just has more rotational mass, centrifugal force, and an overall larger tire diameter that can result in higher top speed / speedometer uncalibrated. At that minute change though, speedo error will hardly change.
