To future UTI orlando students!!!
I don't know if other campuses are the same but the orlando campus is the biggest ripp off. Yes I attend uti right now and I am in my 9th class doing auto tranny. I've already talked to alittle more than a third of the school and they agree with me. If I didnt know a so so amount about cars and didn't have so much money invested I would have dropped out. the rules at the school are wacked? for example-
-the recuiter pretty much tells you that labwork was 60-70 percent and book work was 30-40. nothing wrong with that except in brakes, undercar, basic and advance electric, etc.. if you dont bring in a car or your own to work on they takes point off lab or paticipation. my group did the work that the teacher gave us in lab, other than that my group either couldn't do or afford the parts to work on our car. So we lost point cause we had nothing to do. Also if you end up breaking somthing in a class or frying up you computer in electric all they pay you is 10 dollar, yes thats right 10 dollars!!!!! and by the time the class ends and your car is not done they will just push your car out side and take a big chunk of lab point away. -when i started the school cost around 22 grand, so far i've only had a couple good teachers were i learned somthing real good, the rest of the time i think i payed for alot of papers of bull sht notes. the teachers just read them and tell us to high light stuff, half the time the class dont know what there talking about or half are a sleep because its boring as hell to listen to someone talk for 4 hours. also there are plenty of days where you do apsolutly nothing, no notes, lab or test and we are expected to study, i didn't pay 90 bucks a day to do nothing. the only thing we can do is review the notes. cant put your head down, play cards, or even look at the magazine to make the time fly. you also better have a photo graphic memory and know somthing about cars be cause they go insanely fast, and if you dont go to msat in the end its a waste of money might as well go to ptec for that that. you'll be making to same if you don't make it to msat. some people including me thought we can keep up with the school pase and its not that bad and your living with you parents who pay the bills. I dont have that and i have to work 6 hours aday 6 days aweek to keep up with my bills, when do i have time to study. Its nice to graduate in less than a year but you better have money saved up or prior expirence. like i said not for the beginner or someone looking for a career. i dont want to sound like im b***hin but im just warning the future students, if i knew about how it really went i would have rethought about going to the school. Yes there are people that think its a great school and all but they have more knowledge about cars than the average and got accepted to msat but not everyone makes it. when you go to the school you see BMW excepting 200 students and mercedes excepting 300, (numbers are not exact), but thats out of like 7 school and in one school year. so theres theres a low ratio of students per school that make it to a program. also they told me that thee will be no more than 25 kids per class, i started out with over 35 kids. its hard to get all the questions asked with so many kids. its a long and boring post but it will save some people money, i know alot of pople that quit and some that went to mid fla tech and wyotec and they like it. if you have any questions just IM me, I know that there are a couple uti kids here that feel the same way, so please add to the post. Thanks, Knightdrifter |

the best thing to do
the best thing to do in my opinion is to go to the school during lunch time, step away from the tour lady or guy and acually talk to some of the students there. Of coruse the school is going to bs so you would atttend there school. this way you will acualy get some real info about the school not what you want to hear.

i told all the kids in auto tech classes the same damn thing, the recruiters lie like a bitch.
i cant think of a soul in the world that will make close to what they tell you in your first year. also, you know the 1000 dollar tool certificate for snap on tools? you cant even buy a damn tool box or hardly anything else youll need for the business.i have been in the auto repair industry for 2 years now and just broke free about a week ago. Guys, im being sincere when i say this;make sure this is what you want to do.make sure you want to work on cars the rest of your life.think about it this way;every thing you pour your heart and soul into on the clock will be in the junkyard in 9 or 10 years anyway.the best thing to do is go to a local dealership, and instead of talking to the service advisor or manager, talk directly to the techs, old and young.ask about the business, and if yu are still interested, ask for any important advice or help they can offer.its a physically demanding job,its stressful, its FLAT-RATE!!!,it offers almost no gratitude, and its expensive as hell.most techs at work on average spend about 125-150 thousand dollars in tools in about 10 to 15 years.when you go to sell them, youll get maybe 2500 dollars.do your research guys,be careful, its easy to get stuck in the business. alot of people confuse there hobby that they love doing with there career.i did,and it ruined the best hobby ive ever known. if any one needs help getting hooked up with a coule techs to talk to, id be more than willing to help.i believe kids should be properly informed, not lied to. if interested in speaking to a dealership or two, shoot me an email @ skb2605@yahoo.com or pm me. sorry for the long rant. just wanna help. |

yea..
I acually over heard these two guys talking during break and one guy said before he went to uti he loved cars, by the time he graduated and worked for a couple of month he now hates cars period! you can make tons of money but you can also make shit. the teachers them self tell you that one week you can make 900 dollars and the next make on 100 dollars. also the reason you cant have to many tickets is because dealerships wont insure you if you have a bad record. also everyone including teachers have told me to stay away from dealerships, and work in an independent shop. dealerships have to many guidlines that make work stressful.
Also most of the teachers are just retired techs, and how good do you think a auto mechanice can teach you, hands down so teachers can, but some... |

I don't get it... In one sentence your saying how boring it is.. How its hard to stay awake and they don't allow you to read magazines and how sometimes you have nothing to do... Then you complain they move to fast?
Have you tried STUDYING during that "boring-sleepy" time? It might help. |

This is why I like SCTI so much...its an honest school. They arent there trying to make a buck, whereas UTI found an easy way to rake in dough. If you have already gotten out of high school, you'd be getting Mr. Dieter, and he's a flat out honest guy. He'll tell it like it is, and that's exactly what you need in life. For the price of 1 year of UTI, you could go to SCTI over and over again, including paying the extra $$$ for gas to drive down here. Oh yeah, and for the nutswingers, they have a donated MkIV Supra TT with hardly any miles on it for you to spooge on ![]() The discount on school is incredibly helpful. Just for being in an automotive school, you get about 50% discount on all tools from Snap-On, Mac, and Matco. I could write another book on how Mac and Matco are the best tools out there and how overhyped Snap-On is, but this thread is about the truth of UTI and auto schools. As far as dealership vs. independant shop, I sorta disagree. Depends on what dealership you go to, but I think dealerships have much better benefits, cleaner environment, easier to work with (one specific make of car, not anything-that-can-drive-into-the-shop from Fords to Toyotas) and usually the guys that work at dealerships are better also. Because of that they usually have better tools as well, which means borrowing tools = borrowing high $$ tools ![]() Its really easy to make money on flat-rate, but if you are just starting out, more often than not you will lose your ass on it. Get used to whatever cars you are working on, or cars in general before switching over to flatrate. Once you're ready, its like getting a huge promotion with all the more money you can make! There isnt too much room to "move up" in the company, but you could always just work harder and faster and make that much more. I know I wont be working as a tech my whole life, but so far I think working at a dealership on cars is the best thing I've ever done. I love it to hell! |

Damn,I have heard this from multiple people.I know a couple of people that graduated from UTI and said that it was worthless to them for finding a job also.I also know a couple people that have attended Erwin here in Tampa on Hillsborough and say that the program is good, its not that expensive and they all have jobs before they are even out of school.
