Tellin ya, if this is the field for you, just go in as a lube tech at a dealership and if you show some drive, all the "old timers" will show you the way. Act like a sponge if they don't actually tell you how to fix something and just watch. You'll need that $22k for your tools and a decent box anyways so might as well get paid a little while learning.

Thats how it worked for me, though BMW doesnt have "lube techs", everyone still does oil changes themselves. I just hang around to see whats wrong, whats being replaced and why. And yes I do a majority of the work myself

+1 on those ASE certifications!
I respect those people. You've got the edge over other mechs. .......it also makes you more valuable to others, and gives you mobility. You can go to work in more places, and one day may have your own shop.-Bob |

i was going to go to uti i went up there visited the school and everything i walked in and talked to the people in the office they were telling me about how adavnced there technology is and the lady is walking me around and she points at a row of mr goodwrench 350 cratemotors all carbed she points at them and says this is our high performance engine class i looked at her and started laughing.. i was like excuse me im not trying to be rude but what is "high performance" about carbed 350's? no blower no nitrous no turbo?? well she says that one is supercharged pointing at one of them i look at it.. no charger to be seen there was a dual carb setup with a scoop on it.. so we continue on and im going around looking in class rooms and 90 percent of these kids looked like they wanted to kill themselves... i was extreaaaaamly disapointed in the school... but the thing that really angered me was there eagerness to take your money and run they didnt give a fuck if that school was for me they didnt give a fuck that they didnt impress me with one aspect of there school... i honestly felt bad for those guys that after 6 months of class they now can change a head gasket...
in my opinon F*** uti F*** wyotech... listen to tbird95 and senor honda they know whats going on and they are on point with the info they posted in this thread _Dave |

If you go work at tire kingdom you get paid like 6.40 plus comission, so if you work hard you can make up to 10 bucks an hour in a busy store. Plus they have a maintnance class you can attend and it will teach everything about maitnance (oil changes, alignments, tire, etc.) and get a 50 cent raise. also they have a 9 or 10 week mechanic class that will teach you front end, suspention, and brakes stuff. My mechanics at my shop does absolutly shit and makes no less that 500 a week, the biggest check i seen him have was a 750 dollar money in his pocket check for 1 week. All the class are free and you make more money. The best part is that they reimburst you your money for taking the ASE test. That it self is a big chunk of change. |
