Newbie wanting a decent camera and such

I know it has been stated before, yada yada, I want some personal insight to this though. I've been recommended the Nikon D100, but I thought I'd venture out and see what yall have to offer. I don't want to go above 500 bucks which I know is limiting a lot, but I feel a good camera can still be had. The most use I would get out of this camera would probably involve lots of movement. If you have any personal recommendations you can throw my way I'd like to hear what they are so I can check out some reviews and see where to go from there. Thanks everyone!
