Wait... you can get a D3100 for $400? Do it and resell it. The bodies alone retail for 700 or something new.

Once you do that, buy a D90.

I started off with a D40 and loved it. If I had to choose I would take another D40 over the newer Nikon entry levels any day. Just my .02
