Lightning.
I went through the shots from the other night again.
The original:

Two new ones:
I took someone's advice (dont entirely remember who and I don't feel like opening a new tab to look it up lol) on this one and did a tighter crop on the skyline itself.

All in all I like the original best. My favorite part is how the city remains constant through the whole bottom of the shot, but the sky fades slowly to black from right to left.

lol I dont really care. It doesn't bother me that people would want to print one for themselves, kind of flattering I guess.
Now, if I were to catch someone selling my pictures? Thats a whole different story obviously.

I can probably say that because I don't use photography as a main source of income. If putting gas in my car depended on selling my pictures, I might have a different outlook.
But alas, that's not the point of this thread!
So let us continue admiring my great talent of pointing my camera at a cloud and hitting the shutter over and over.

I wasn't quite specific enough. I had envisioned a vertical crop of the original. The lightning looks more interesting in the original than the two new ones you posted. Also, the clouds look better. Either way, I still like the original I just don't think there's enough emphasis on the lightning. People are amazed by lightning pictures because they think you have to be super-fast to catch the lightning.

I'm not going to lie, I was one of those people for a long time. Then I got into photos and lightwriting and understood how they did it.

I'm actually glad this was made into a post. I have to pick up a tripod (Original was stolen) and go out on my balcony when it's like that. Going to try and get lighting striking the radio tower. I hope.Last edited by The Hedgehog; 06-24-2010 at 10:22 AM.

Ahhhh I follow. I may have to see what I can do when I get home. I'm afraid that if I crop it any tighter you'll be able to see how fuzzy the buildings are.
I think I might need to clean my kit lens. It's either that or it was just super hazy outside. But haze doesn't usually cause chromatic abberations though.
*shrugs* one way or another, I need a new wide/zoom lens. This kit lens shit ain't cutting it.

I haven't done one of these in awhile, you may have just inspired me lol.
Overall, all the crops work. I agree with you though I seem to like the original, maybe its the lack of data in the top left that is throwing everyone off. It seems a bit grey for a black and white image though, I think it could benefit from a more dramatic contrast.TONYMORGAN
