Newbie looking for a nice camera.
My wife and I are wanting to buy a nice camera. We have a sony point and shoot but the pictures just suck compared to a dslr. We would like to get a nice entry-mid level dslr that we can keep for several years and learn on. We don't need the best but I would prefer a good one that I can buy accesories for and will be supported by the manufacturer or aftermarket for a while. What kind of cam do you guys suggest? I am looking in the $5-600 range to start. any and all input very much appreciated.

Some kid has been trying to sell his D40 on here.
It's a great camera but his ad doesn't include a lens. You can just start from scratch and buy whatever lens suits your needs!
If not, go either Nikon or Canon. They are mainly used by professionals so . . .

I've read somewhere that nikon wont sell the lens or the body of the d40 separately. You have to buy it as a package as far as I know. And that kinda makes me think you cant get other lens/accessories for it. I'll do some more research on it. Do you have any model numbers fom nikon or cannon you can recommend?

If you want a factory warranty, Nikon will not sell the D40 just buy itself. I never read anything of the opposite, but I have read from stores on eBay that the Nikon D40 [camera body only] they sell comes with a Nikon Warranty.
Anyway, since you are just starting out I'd go for the D40x 10.2MP and a great beginner camera. Or if you find yourself a Canon favorite go for the XTi, XSi, or XS depending on how they are priced.
Be aware that the Nikon D40 & D60 will only autofocus with lenses labled as AF-S. Don't buy into the bias comments where people favor one brand over the other. Canon and Nikon products are comparatively similar.

after doing some looking around I think we are going to get a Nikon d60 by years end. Any one have a good place to buy them? Ebay seem to have some decent deals on new ones.

the D60 is good, however its going to give you the same dilemma with only eing able to use AF-S capable lenses which means the focusing motor is inside the lens, not the camera body. This limits the Nikon, and even after market lens selection. However, there are more companies making AF-S compatible lenses so it wont be as big of a deal now or come the beginning of the year...
