what's your budget?
what, if any, gear do you have now?
what type of photography are you interested in?
does your class have any requirements? film or digital?

answering these will help us help you

If you think you're interested in Nikon gear, these items would give you an excellent start:
Nikon D80 (digital) - $600
Nikon F75 (film) - $170
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 - $110

The lens doesn't zoom, but that would allow you to concentrate on the basics of photography and it will work on both cameras.

The website I linked to is highly recommended.

As a general rule, those people are idiots... I sold computers at BBY for 3 years and didn't know crap
Depending on where you live, maybe go see Michael and North Tampa Photo

The D80 is actually now discontinued, but they are still available and a good compromise for your budget. The D90 is out now (and why the D80 is no longer made), and it looks like an extremely bad ass camera... there's a dedicated thread here.

The D40 & D60 are also both nice cameras, and a bit cheaper than the D80;
But the reason I didn't recommend them is because they won't have the ability to auto-focus with the lens I mentioned...
There will be other compatibility issues as well between those and the film body.

The D90 is gonna be out of your price range.

Canon also has options... when you find someone to talk to, ask about the Rebel XTi & XSi (digital), the Rebel G (film) or whatever other film body might be suitable, and what lenses would be compatible with each. Prices should be competitive.
