I had to do this as well, for the same reason... I was using my sb-600 on a stand with umbrella and the wind caught it.

I had some problems getting the tube back in on mine and ended up just melting a little bit of the clear housing with my soldiering iron to get the tube to seat correctly.
Ended up working fine, the rest of the time I owned it

Nice write-up

Thanks Jake. I melted a couple of things with the soldering iron too, simply because I don't have steady hands. I found that if you solder the end of the tube that has the wire on it first then everything fits in properly. If you do the other end first (as I did the first time) then it's nearly impossible to get everything back together.

I'm still having an issue with the flash not zooming past 70mm because I bent the little copper zoom prongs pretty badly. I went the whole way without bending them at all, and then within five minutes of finishing i bent them all about 90 degrees.

Yeah, I also had a problem when I put it back together the first time that one of them wasn't touching... so, it just kept zooming back and forth.
Just gently bending them back, and overcorrecting a little got them to sit tight against the contacts.

Good luck.
