Question This is gonna hurt.......................but I've got a Camera Question

I've been using a 4.0MP Kodak Easyshare DX7440 camera for a couple years now and I've been wanting to step up a little bit. I was looking around on Canon's site and found two of their "Advanced Point & Shoot" Powershot cameras that I really like. I'd love to get an EOS DSLR, but I just don't have $1400 handy at the moment. Anyways, the two I like are the S5 IS and the G7.

I like the S5 for the swivel screen and longer battery life (plus the fact that you can get AA's anywhere) also it has a little more zoom.

I like the G7 with it's retro look and ability to share lenses with an EOS (if I ever got one). It's 10.0MP over 8.0MP, but has less zoom and only 5 hours of battery life.

Which one would you suggest (or an EQUAL equivalent to these)? Does anyone have any experience with either of these? I know that everyone on TR is an e-knowitall, but I'm looking for some serious and fact-based answers.

Thanks.

I dont know too much about either of the wo cameras but I do know that the SD800 is a camera!!! I bought it for my G/F and let me tell you, that thing takes some CLEAR pictures for a point and shoot camera!!!

Here are a couple of pictures I took with the SD800 (b/c I wasnt going to bring the 30D around the water .) You can be the judge!

Oh that G7 looks neat..so you can use it the way it is or put your own lens on? Sounds killer.

My rebel xt with a 28-80mm lense was only 600 man. I mean if your gonna buy a 400-500 dollar camera, why not save a few more pay checks.

Yeah, sorta, more like "in the field" work... I went down to Best Buy to actually see these cameras all in person and see how I liked them and to me I think that helps a little bit...

They had the entire canon lineup of EOS DSLR's (XT, XTi, 30D, and 5D) but only had the S5 IS. I asked about the G7, but they have only heard of it (never seen or carried). Anyways, on further inspection, the lens on the S5 does not come off, only the little ring around the edge which makes me wonder, these tele-converter lenses I saw on eBay, do they just click onto the outside or something...? This didn't seem like too big of a deal because it already had a pretty long zoom range already; probably more than I would ever use anyways.

Next I wandered over to look at the XT (looked at the S5 first because that's what started all of this), but it was dead. The charger thing was disconeccted, so I couldn't see how it operated. I played with the XTi a little, but 800 is more than me for the time being (and the $3699.99 D5 will probably always be).

I'm thinking maybe I'll go to a camera store such as Ritz in Countryside mall next to see if they have the G7 and to compare their prices to Best Buy.

By the way, Best Buy had a 4GB SDHC card by PNY for $72.99, looked like a killer deal to me, so I'll probably try to find a camera that uses SD over CF.

Any thoughts on all this, or was it just a bunch of monotinous babble..?

^ Good place to buy. The link should take you to a list of DSLRs, shown by price, low to high.

Im planning on upgrading my cam to the xti. So i may be selling my xt for cheap. But it will just be the body because all the parts are transferable. I may be selling it for 400 or so. it cost me around 550 after tax and handling, and its only 6 months old. Ill let you know though.

throwing money away on apoint and shoot is just silly. youre going to get another one and still want to upgrade. Save your money and buy a nice nikon orcannon xt. you dont have to get the xti. You can find pretty good deals around here on them from people.

Check the Photography section of TF. There is almost always a Rebel for sale over there. Also check the Electronics forum in the For Sale section.
