I really liked the Rebel XT when I shot it. I really didn't have a chance to mess with it alot though.

I personally wanted a Nikon D80, but I had the Canon right in front of me and they were out of the Nikon. Plus as much as i like Nikon I keep hearing the canon is better in the end.

I ended up paying exactly 1k for the Camera, 1GB Memory, a LCD sun cover thingy and a soft bag to put the camera in. I LIKE IT ALOT!

WTF is the LCD sun cover thingy??? If its the screen that goes over the LCD's on the camera (like the Nikon has) LMK where the fuck you got it!!! I need/ want one for my Canon 30D <~ Gotcha beat sucka ! But the XTI is still a camera!!! If youre talking about the lens filter, I already have a few of those!!! LMK!

Hall-er Baller!!!

Wal-Mart carries the LCD sun-blocker thingy. You have to stick it onto your camera and then you flip out the flaps so that you can see the LCD screen in bright sunlight. It actually was getting very annoying b/c you have to close it to take a picture then open it to review the picture but then i figured out how to take it off temporarily for when it is not needed. Yeah I figured 1k for my first SLR was quite enough, I can always upgrade later on but I probably wont..Ill just get new lenses

Hmmm...I think your confusing the XT and the XTI.

XTI = 10.1 megapixels

XT = 8.0 megapixels

30D = 8.2 megapixels

XTI > 30D...

One thing i like better is the durablity of the 30D. But i would never go for the 30D as a first SLR. Its way too complicated. The XTI is the best camera you can get for the money.

But its all in what you like. Ive shot with about every camera there is. And the 30D was good, but was too big for me. I also didnt like the placement of the power button. On the 300 and 400D series cameras the power button is next to the program and shoot button. Being able to program, shoot, and then power off in one hand.

I guess they both have there Pros and cons though. So like i said, its all in what you want.
At current rates, for the cost of a 30d body alone, you can purchase a 400d body and good L lens such as the 70-200mm L f/4 USM lens and for an entry-level photographer, this could be a very tempting alternative. Thats one reason the 400D sell more. Thus making the reviews higher, but not nessesarily* meaning the 400D is a much better camera...but to the eyes of a noob, it will be.

Another thing i did like about the 30D is the shutter speed. 1/8000, versus 1/4000 Is an advantage for shooting fast-moving subjects. So when i shot at the Gran Prix or the drift event at HIN, i might of preffered the 30D. But like i stated twice allready, its all in what your looking for. Thats why they make a HUGE RANGE of different cameras and not just one.

Sorry for the long writup...
Any questions on cameras or photography in general LMK.

So what would you suggest between the Canons for a noobie? I shot with a XT and a Nikon, and liked the simplicity of the Canon, so I really think I am going to get one, but I want to make sure I look at all the options in that price range.

Nice write up.. I wasnt confusing the XTI and the XT... I knew the XTI was 10.2 (thats what I was originally looking at) but, I figured "The Twanksta" would like the 30D b/c of its 5 pictures per second vrs. the 3 pictures per second the XTI has (for his x-crossing events...) The power button is in a convenient location... Its not in the way of anything and I dont recall accidently hitting it...

XTI> 30D ... Lets be realistic here... If someone had both cameras out on a table and you were able to have either one; youre telling me you would take the XTI???

Yes, 10.2> 8.2 if youre a beginer with cameras and all you know to look for is the higher mega pixles... So obviously the 10.2 mp sounds better than the 8.2 but you and I both know that the 8.2 is plenty for what anyone needs (Unless youre making posters and the 8.2 will still be crystal clear for a poster!!!) I also didnt want to start with the XTI and be pissed a year from now when I've mastered it and wished that I would have bought the 30D...

I bought the 30D with the optional Ultra Sonic Image Stablizer 28-135mm lens (for a couple of hundred more) and it was WELL worth the money!!! All-in-all, youre write about one thing... Buy a camera that you (the buyer) will be happy with and something that will be user friendly (for the first time photographer!) I'm still learning the ropes on the 30D but I will have it "mastered" in no-time! Its really not that hard to use once you've played with it for a little bit!!!

Cheers
