I must have had at least 10 240sx owners ask me for a paint job. Their cars are usually, multi-colored, rattlecanned, dented to hell, 3 econo paints on top each other ect... So When I give them a REALISTIC yet REASONABLE estimate, they look at me like I have 6 heads....
If this is YOU, I'm not the guy - sorry.
If you actually CARE about your car and want to have thumbs up whether from the peanut gallery or the old farts, then go quality and I'm your guy along with several other on here on TR. But remember - Quality and Cheap are OPPOSITES..... you will NEVER have both.
I did a miata, bodywork/repaint original color - Everytime someone sees it, they say "MAAAN NICE !! Who Painted it?"...... BAM! that is what I gear towards.......

All you guys schooling me on paint jobs obviously dont know me. first I started a body shop business in the early 80s. I was into customizing VW bugs. I made my own projects look incredible and those who saw them wanted it for their cars as well. Every car was stripped completely down to bare metal. reassembled with all new rubber trim parts . I used solely dupont enamels with hardener. My goals were paint jobs out of the booth with no orange peel and no runs. virtually nothing to rub out. this is the best type of paint job to have as the surface pores are not broken up with sandpaper. I was quite good in the booth. I was charging 1600-2200 for paint jobs back then. I also was buying and selling cars at a very early age and experimented with Earl Shiebs and Econo. Both were 99-249 paint jobs at the time. So I know all about what happens when you dont pay much for a paint jobs. If were to repaint cars today I dont think I would be interested in anything less than 5k to paint a car. I get it. painting cars is a lot of work. It also the most hit or miss business on the planet. You sometimes dont know what you are gonna get untill its too late. very hard to please everyone. one of the reasons I got out of it.
Later in life with raising a family I choose to have paint some of my cars painted by others. I have gotten some very nice paint jobs in the 1200-1800 range. This car is an exception. There was plenty of money on the table to spray the car nice. It just didnt happen. The guy came recommended to me as a really good painter for reasonable. And that turned out to be bad advice. The good side is the body work on the car is quite nice. considering there was likely 30-40 small dents and such I am very pleased with that part of the investment. The second upside the outside of the car has enough paint on it to rub out nice. I have about 1/2 the car sanded with 800 and it is coming out really nice. once I have sanded the whole car with 800 I will decide what parts need to be repainted. then progress to finer grits and finally buffing. Its not hard to repaint the jams with low pressure sprayer when the car is already stripped. When I am finished it will look like a 3500 paint job. I dont think this work was acceptable for the price paid. You are certainly entitled to your own opinion. I do believe econo job would have looked far better. They actually have extremely good booths and painters who spray very well to boot. The maskers who tape day in and day out are also extremely well trained. The only downside to econo type places is they have to use their paint to get good results with flow and lack of runs. you cant walk in their with your own paint unless you know someone who will allow it. at least that is how it used to be.
This car here is the last car I custom painted myself. Actually the entire project (save seat covers, that I wasnt too happy with) from ground up was built be me. No other hands touched the car. The car is all metal project. 240 labor hours in cutting and welding alone. The paint is ditzler delsar single stage. hand rubbed flawless back yard paint job.

^ i personally wasn't schooling you per sae - its just that THIS is the exact problem that comes with "I wanna cheap paintjob" threads ect.. and therefore I posted my response to school the ones that dont know... and not trying to offend but 1. you already got schooled by the guy that ripped you off and 2. I saw the purple bug and therefore, why wouldnt you do the job yourself? I get the whole family thing yadda yadda yadda but I'm in the same boat and I swear, chip foose could want to paint my car himself and I'd rather paint it myself since it's MY car and MY expectations..
I hope you dont have to spend too much time trying to get it right... Im a fan of the EVO I car and would hate to see it go to waste..
Good luck.....

Damn, that is unbelieveable. I probably could have done a better job with a spray paint can.
