Paint job cost: $757.56
Paint job cost: $757.56 - All products were Sherman Williams. I called a couple of paint stores and was told the same thing; it's good stuff. One guy told me, "The only thing that separates SW from Dupont and PPG is the price. SW costs less. It's just as good as any of them if the painter knows how to mix and shoot."
Sand and prep. Prime, 2 coats base, 3 coats clear. 3 year total cost repaint warranty/ years 4 and 5 would be pro-rated. I plan on waxing this car in about 3 months and will do it every 6months after that. I have no worries about the paint lasting.
I brought it in Monday morning and watched the sanding, cleaning, degreasing, trim removal including emblems and taping.
Tuesday I was there for prime, base and clear coating. As a matter of fact, I brought in a bunch of baked goods my wife made and drank coffee and ate the stuff with the guys while we were waiting on stuff. Probably didn't hurt the final product.
My orginal plan was to pay the service manager an extra $50 under the table to keep a close eye on things. He refused to take it after the work was done, and believe me, I insisted several times. He flat out wouldn't take it.
Anyway, I picked it up this afternoon after they finished polishing it up.
Here's some before and after shots. *Pic #4 is does not show overspray on seam between hood and fender, It's a trick of light or something.
There was no overspray, no runs, no orange peel. No problems at all.

Yep, that's right. Maaco. Signature Series paint job, with Value Prep, well under $800. Business seems to be a little slow there and the one I selected ( I went to 3 diferent Maaco's and let them know I was doing this) cut their price to the bone without too much haggling AND without sacrificing quality.
I watched them every step of the way. They took their time and did a real, real nice job.
Now some of you boys can say anything you want about Maaco. But remember now, they are franchises. They ain't all owned by one big corporation.
Find a good one, with good people working there and you can get a nice paint job for pretty low dough. And pretty quick too. Monday morning to Wednesday afternoon? FIne with me.
Right before and right after Christmas I imagine things are slow at most auto painting places. This is probably the best time of year to get a car painted.
My advice is to study up on car painting a little bit and learn the words so you don't get conned.
Insist on a work order that outlines exactly what they will do to the car and what materials will be used.
Insist on a written warranty.
Inspect it closely when it's done and have them fix any problems before you take off. (I couldn't find anything wrong with what they did for me).
Some auto painters won't like my giving out this advice. The honest ones won't mind a bit.
Oh yeah. What happened to all that overspray on the tires, windows and trim some of you boys promised me?????? I didn't get any.Last edited by mickey; 12-17-2009 at 09:41 PM.

I thought imperfections etc. would show up easier and be more noticeable on a white car and they would be hidden more by darker colors.
Anyway, $750 for their top of the line paint job with the warranty? I'll take it. I think I found a good Maaco that needed the work.

IT'S PUT UP OR SHUT UP TIME!!!!!! (See below)
I hoped I'd be hearing from you, sour grapes.
What ever happened to all that overspray on the tires, windows and trim you promised me?????? I didn't get any. Not a friggin' drop!
I promise I'll post some pics in 6 months.
What do you predict will go wrong? Remember, I watched them every step of the way. And they did it right.
Do you think Sherwin Williams products are inferior? That's the only thing thing that could cause problems.
Care to put your money where your mouth is?
How about $100?
I will put up photos of the car on June 17th and we'll do a poll on whether the paint job has held up or not.
OR
You and I can agree on a "neutral" judge here in Tampa that I can bring the car to and let him be the judge of whether or not the paint is in good shape.
Whattya say, pal? Put up or shut up.
Or are you just talking out your ass as usual?Last edited by mickey; 12-17-2009 at 09:44 PM.

I had my car painted at the Maaco on Anderson/Hills and had all of the overspray you describe above, as well as some Premium Grade gravel embedded in my rocker panels. I paid about 700 bucks for that paintjob, IIRC.
You realize that the painters your insulting forgot more than most of the painters at Maaco know, right? The paintjob looks decent from the pictures. Congratulations. But don't go insulting the masters of the trade by insinuating that the bargain job you got compares to a good paintjob.

I'm not insulting anyone. I just don't understand how anyone can say, "ALL Maacos suck and do poor work." It just isn't so.
The quality of the job received depends on which Maaco you go to, how talented (or untalented) the people who work on the car are and how much money you are willing to spend.
Sounds like you went to a Maaco that employed either untalented or uncaring people or both. And I'm sorry you're experience was a bad one.
I did my homework, talked to everyone who was involved in the job before it began and I watched the work being done.
It was a pain in the ass but it was worth it.

lol the "a" in toyota is crooked. nice job maaco. the reason 99% of Maacos are no good is bc they receive a lot of rookies who just finished their certification to work for them. They pay them $9 an hour to paint cars. Honestly, no great painter is going to work for $9 an hour. thats peanuts
-I highly doubt they primed this car entirely. it would be a complete waste of time. and for the price you paid its not worth for them to spend 2 hours priming it.
-They DID NOT polish this car either. so do not even lie. a proper wet sand and buff would be the only thing to do to a car after its painted that makes sense. and they DID NOT wet sand and buff. that's easily $200 extra at maaco. just polishing a freshly painted car makes no sense and is a waste of time.Last edited by willyspaintshop; 12-18-2009 at 04:00 PM.

lol so true maaco sucks if your just trying to freshing up the look of your paint then yea by all means maaco for 700 includes the following: overspray like a bicth, runs, cheap ass clear paint brand dont matter although qaulity is key. clear plays the biggest role in fading, durability etc if you want good paint and want a good paintjob go through autobodys. ppg paint for the win idc what nobody says or what your opion is you get what you pay for i. i own a 2300 dollar paintjob on my ek hacth
dont regret it one bit

WOW, other people agree with me, and the other "real" painters on here,..
again, you asked for advice.
http://www.tamparacing.com/forums/pa...-94-camry.html
Hey,
My wife has a 94 Camry with only 80k miles. We just got through replacing ALL the seals on it, including the rear main. Did some other stuff too while we were in there too (timing belt and so on).
Anway, now we're looking to get it a nice paint job. It's white now and we ain't gonna change the color. The seals and stuff cost us quite a bit and we have only about $1,000 left to put into a paint job.
I don't know anything about car painting. What should we be wary of? What should we ask about the way they do it? I don't want to take it somewhere and get fast talked and screwed.
The problem with the paint is it got Malathion on it years ago and the resulting dark spots on the hood, roof, trunk are all the way through the paint so I guess we might as well get a complete repaint.
What can we expect for $1,000? Anybody recommend anybody in the Tampa area who can do a good job for $1,000?
Talk to me, guys. I need someone to take me to school on this.
Thanks,
Mickey
people did "school" you on this and you did not care,
shall i go on?.....
mickey
C'mon guys. Is it going to be Maaco? We can go $1200 tops.
Macco quoted $800 for their "top of the line" Signature paint job with the Prep Plus package.
