    Painting chrome??

Can it be done? I'm having the bottom (tan) part of my truck painted black to match my new wheels, and I want to paint my bumpers black aswell, but they're chrome. Can you paint over chrome, or should I just try selling them and buying the work model bumpers that are paintable?

Chrome needs to come off = sandbasting then prime them to a paintable condition which would be pricey

    Thats what I thought.

I have some posts floating around on a few sites trying to get someone with a work model or sport model with painted grille/bumpers to even trade me, as soon as I can get the paintable grille/bumpers I'm going to be needing some paint work done, had the new wheels mounted up yesterday and it looks a little odd with the tan.

Here's one of the tan turned to black, like I said, just needs painted bumpers/grille, and some black housing harley davidson headlights.

I am no painter by any means but i thought you would be able to powder coat over chrome and be fine. A buddy of mine wanted to do his chrome parts and a painter stated that he could just powder coat the parts. If this is wrong let me know before my buddy gets screwed.

If it is a good powder coating, it will have to be stripped in the sand blaster. I have worked in the powder coating shop onboard the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln and have quite a bit of experience. You can get away with it if you bumper is flawless but results are not guaranteed. we have done it before on harley davidson exhaust (for my buddy) and it didn't turn out great. the powder just looked super dull. However I do have an Uncle that has a new machine that actually uses paint instead of powder and comes out beautiful. It can take quite a beating too, the process he uses makes the paint strong like powdercoat and quite a bit cheaper. If you are interested e-mail me and I will see if I can get him to hook you up!

I dont need this info anymore. I bought work model bumpers, and I'm having the whole truck painted matte black in feb.

You can paint on chrome using the correct Epoxy Primer and proper Scuffing of the Chrome Surface.

Just saw this thread wasn't needed anymore, but aslong as the piece is flawless with no chrome chipping or flaking, you can powder coat over the chrome.
