And when it is all said an done it is not cheaper, Not if your getting paid for everything you do, the used qtr is all tweaked and damaged and scabbed on your new car, all for INSURANCE COMPANIES to save money, i don't mind used doors and fenders or what not, but NEVER A WELD ON PANEL. Only NEW OEM, that way it has proper e-coat protection and you know where it came from, and its a hundered times easier to weld on. unless of course you still mig weld on replacement panels, which has now been replaced by compression spot welding.

and Eric please tread lightly here, because i dont think you have been in this industry for as long as i have and there is a whole other world that i do not believe you are aware of yet that plagues this trade.

I also want to point out that it is prolly not "as strong" as factory, are these quaters sleeved? if so that would make it stronger than factory, also how many plug welds are put in place of the factory welds and where at?

AND since when does price come before a quality and safe repair, the price should have NOTHING TO DO WITH THAT. Our job as a body repair technician should be to restore the car back to pre accident condition, and keep the car the same as factory in the aspect of collision absorbing energy propertys. After all it could be your kid in that car when is all said and done.
oh I know, I am just an apprentice, and its not how I would do my vehicle. I'm just saying, it does go on, and it sucks for the bodyman. because now we have 2 panels to remove instead of 1, we have to deal with all the holes, damage to the new panel, ect. also we do not weld our panels except for at points were we overlap to the existing panel. we panel bond all the seams (on used peices, new ones are mig spot welded). but even still, I was in auto body trade school for 2 years plus 1 semester of damage reporting/estimate calculating. and they also taught us to use recycled panels, and the panel bonding method. does it work? yes. is it safe? ehh... I wouldnt keep a vehicle repaired that way. either way it seems to be the standard now

Eric dont you have that backwards? the used pieces should be mig welded cause u already have the holes, and the new panels can be panel bonded, and Or compresson spot welded, or mig plug welded if you really have to, but id rather use the Compresson spot welder, makes welds just like factory no waiting for glue to dry, and NO grinding welds!

And it will continue to be standard until people ;Bodymen, body shops, and customers Realize whats going on, and make a stand, that it is a garbage and unsafe repair, and that the insurance companys are only interested in saving a buck, and adjusters getting there rewards and kickbacks for writing for these used and aftermarket garbage parts. Its a shame that the Customer is the one that really looses, followed by the technician.

send me a pm eric about your current situation, pay rate, and duties, and what all you got going on, i have a nice website for you and a forum, that may just help you out some! - mike

I'm just saying how they do it where I'm at. I finally found out why today. I asked the bodyman I'm apprenticing under about why they do that. he said its because of this "going green" kick, and the would rather recycle a junk part onto a driveable vehicle than produce a new part and have waste. its a bunch of corporate b/s, and yeah alot of these insurance guys and such need to spend a day in a bodyshop so they can understand what kinda crap they pull on us. yeah I'll pm you that info

yea but they have been writing for used garbage since day one, and the bottom line is to Save money, since you can buy a whole 1/4 clip of a car for about half to 3/4 the price of a new skin. This going Green thing is a bunch of BS, since the insurance companys are not the ones who make the Cars or parts, and the OEM parts makers are nto making money of fof junk yard parts, they would much rather you buy a new one, so no one gives a shit about recycling, its just another insurance company scam~! besides alot of manufactures strictly say NO USED WELD ON PARTS in there body repair manuals such as toyota and lexus. and while it does help recycle, id rather not sacrifice my safety or any one elses, with weld on used scabs. Doors, fenders that are in good condition and cleaned are still rather acceptable, espically on an older car, as long as there inspected thoroughly. If your insurance company is writing for a used weld on part, beware its a garbage repair! and will not last.
