Question Question on mixing paint.

I know this might be a stupid question, but i'd rather feel stupid than end up with a bad paint job after spending all the dough. Here is the thing, I have painted before using Matrix Systems paint. It was simple to mix being that I only mixed equal parts paint and reducer. The thing is now I am trying a different paint, Nason. This one requires me to do parts paint and one part reducer and 2oz. per quart of some activator.

My question is simple, how do I know what equals 2 parts paint and 1 part reducer? Can someone give me an example using ounces?

2 TO 1.. example: 24 oz. to 12 oz. If I understand you correctly- a sprayable quart would consist of approx. 20oz paint to 10 oz redicer and 2 oz activator.

Yea, I think Matrix is good stuff as well except I wanted to do a cheaper base and tried out this Dupont Nason Paint. I have used Nason clear before. THis is the first time I will use the base though.

new to the states is Wanda, a base from Akzo Noble. Vary easy to use for the price. Better than Matrix due to less modeling. Almost like Diamont but less inexpensive. TIA carries it

I use an Akzo Nobel line called U-TECH. Its lower dollar but I ve had great results. Gallon of base for around $120 and clear kits for the same.

Is the Akzo easy to shoot as far as the CLear coat goes? Sounds like inexpesive stuff. A gallon of this Nason stuff cost me $260 for base. The clear kit from Nason is only $80.

Nason clear is watery to me. The UTECH I use has a high and medium solids for better build.

Yes, I have to agree. I have used Matrix clear when i had the money for it. I only had to use 1-2 coats for a solid hard layer rather than 3 coats with the Nason. But its not bado for the price. I will have to check the Akzo stuff out though.

Ive seen nason used alot, but I dont like it b/c the base usually doesnt cover well b/c they use less pigment and more binder when they mix it compared to a higher end paint like dupont's chromabase. depending on the color you got 260 sounds like alot for nason

Another thing to watch when buying basecoats is the mixture ratios. Your higher end paints are sometimes 1:1 so when you reduce it you actually get more paint to spray and it still covers well. In essense you pay more for the paint but you use less.

As far as clears go, medium solid clears (4:1 mixture ratios) tend to be easier to spray because they have less solid content more solvent then a high solid clear that you need to push on to get it to flow out. Ive had good results with UPOL clears if im goin for price, they have a med solid 4:1 gallon kit for around $60 and a high solids 2:1 (5 ltr clear, 2.5 ltr hardner almost 2 gallons) for around $120.

No matter who you talk to, everybody is going to give you a different opinion...

I will keep that in mind while spraying base this time with Nason. I know that Matrix only needed 1-2 coats to cover an area pretty well. Hope I have no problem with Nason base. Now I have used Nason CLear and It is a 4:1 Ration clear. I know that everyone has there preferances. I just want to find a good reputable brand for the price for my next paint job. THanks Joe

Utech base goes on like single stage. You can cover Zebra stripes in one heavy pass!

I've used Nason quite a bit and have never seen where it was a 2:1 ratio. I've always mixed it 1:1 with no problem.
