Special Feature for 2016: The CERV I
CERV I

The Lake Mirror Classic will feature a VERY RARE SPOTTING! Zora Duntov’s unique research designs will be shown off; the CERV I and the CERV II will both be on display at the event. This is an EXTREMELY SPECIAL OCCASION as these two vehicles have only been shown together a few times.

About the CERV I: The CERV I was developed between 1959 and 1960 by Zora Duntov as a functional mid-engine, open wheel, single-seat prototype racing car, with Larry Shinoda and Tony Lapine doing the design work. Duntov developed CERV I as a platform for engineers to develop and refine Chevrolet’s body, chassis and suspension systems. Its impressive performance on the test track drove him to have higher aspirations, the checkered flag at Indy. Due to the AMA (Automobile Manufacturer’s Association) ban on manufacturer-sponsored racing at the time, Duntov drove the CERV I’s demo laps at the U.S. Grand Prix in 1960.

The CERV I was originally equipped with a 283 cid / 350 hp, small block V8 engine, weighing only 350 lbs. Intensive use of aluminum and magnesium engine components saved over 175 lbs. Complementing its lightweight power plant, designer, Larry Shinoda constructed the body structure out of fiberglass, which weighed in at only 80 lbs. Chrome-molybdenum tube constructed frame, welded in a truss-like configuration. Combining these lightweight components helped the CERV I’s 96-inch wheelbase weigh in at 1,600 lbs. The chassis features a four-wheel independent suspension. The front suspension uses independent, variable rate springs with shock absorbers and a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension uses independent multilink, variable rate springs, with double acting shock absorbers and the wheels are cast magnesium alloy. Steering is recirculating ball type with 12:1 ratio.

The brake system uses front disc/rear drum, with a two piston master cylinder to eliminate the chance of complete brake failure. Fuel is delivered via two rubber bladder fuel cells (20 gal. total capacity).

Fuel injected small block technology was developed using the CERV I. For even greater performance, Duntov refitted the CERV I with a 377 cu. in. aluminum small block, an advanced Rochester fuel injection system and Indy-style tires and wheels. To match this mechanical updating, Shinoda redesigned its streamlined body structure for greater aerodynamics. Top speed was 206 mph.

Top Car Collectors[/h] The wonderful display of more than 650 show vehicles surrounding the restored, 1920’s art deco-inspired Lake Mirror Promenade in Downtown Lakeland provides one of the most scenic venues in the country. This event is known for its beautiful lakefront setting and friendly atmosphere.
The Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival attracts over 40,000 spectators and draws top car collectors from all over the southeast. Also, this show serves as a support event to the prestigious Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance.

The Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival has become a popular venue for marque-specific car clubs to host a club gathering. Car clubs registering 10 or more vehicles will receive a reserved Club parking area and (3) Lake Mirror Classic ribbons which can be awarded by the club to their members. [h=1]Frequently Asked Questions[/h]




(Q) Does my car have to be invited to participate in the Lake Mirror Classic?
(A) No. We have categories for all types of collectible automobiles regardless of age – provided space is available. The “Concours d’Elegance” is the judged section of the show and it is limited to selected vehicles which must fit within one of the defined classes and be pre-approved by our selection committee. Vehicles applying for the Concours d’Elegance must submit a supplemental application and be approved by the Concours Selection Committee. [HR][/HR] (Q) How many cars will you accept?
(A) We have room for approximately 650 total show vehicles for the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival. The Concours d’Elegance is limited by space to approximately 120 vehicles.
[HR][/HR] (Q) Is the Budweiser Hot Rod Rendezvous on Friday evening open to all types of cars?
(A) Yes, however the space is very limited so Hot Rods, Customs, and Muscle Cars will be given priority.
[HR][/HR] (Q) Is there a separate entry fee to participate in the Hot Rod Rendezvous?
(A) A separate entry fee of $30 applies to vehicles participating in the Hot Rod Rendezvous.
[HR][/HR] (Q) Will there be special parking available for collector cars at the Budweiser Hot Rod Rendezvous on Friday evening?
(A) Yes. Collector Car Parking will be permitted on the grass on the west side of Lake Mirror for no charge.
[HR][/HR] (Q) Is it hard to find lodging in Lakeland?
(A) No. The Lakeland area has an abundance of fine lodging. Visit our Lodging Page for some recommendations.
[HR][/HR] (Q) How will I know when to arrive and where to go the day of the show?
(A) After your application is accepted you will receive a packet of information from us containing maps, information sheets as well as a dash card to place in your windshield. This packet will have a specific check-in time and gate number for your arrival.
[HR][/HR] (Q) Can I park next to my friend’s car?
(A) If you both have the same arrival time and gate number then just arrive at the gate together. If your gates and times are different then it means that your cars are not similar enough to be on display together. Cars are put on display according to age and category of car.
[HR][/HR] (Q) Is there secured, overnight parking for show cars?
(A) Yes. There will be secured, overnight parking in the Orange Street garage. We also have another designated area two blocks from the show. Details will be provided in the vehicle registration packet.
[HR][/HR] (Q) How can my car club register?
(A) We need at least 10 registered cars before considering a dedicated group display area. Special display areas are subject to space availability. Clubs interested in displaying their vehicles together should contact ginny Askew prior to October 1st. (A) There are many parking lots around the city that are open to the public the day of the show. You can view a map of downtown Lakeland here, parking locations are denoted by a blue circle.
[HR][/HR] (Q) How can I qualify to the Concours d’Elegance portion of the show?
(A) The vehicle must fit into one of the Concours categories and you must submit a supplemental application and photos for review by the Concours selection committee.

(A) No. A single registration fee takes care of Downtown Festival or Concours registration. Vehicles applying for the Concours d’Elegance must submit a supplemental application and be approved by the Concours Selection Committee. (A) All cars, except Cars For Sale, must be preregistered for the show. Early registration ends Sep. 1 with a registration fee of $50. Late registration continues until Oct. 2nd with a registration fee of $75.

(A) You will be notified by mail in the latter part of September.
[HR][/HR] (Q) Are rental golf carts or motorized scooters available at the show?
(A) No, we do not provide this service.

We will present the “Auto Biographies” of five special vehicles. These cars will be presented on the red carpet at the Lake Mirror Amphitheater with an in depth discussion by Bill Warner, Ed Lucas and the owner revealing the life-story of each car. The Auto Biography vehicles to be presented at next year’s show will be selected closer to the date of the event and posted here. Stay tuned!














[h=2]Concours d’Elegance[/h] The Concours d’Elegance is the featured event of the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival weekend. Approximately 100 premium classic automobiles are invited to be displayed along the Lake Mirror Promenade on Saturday. A team of expert judges inspect and grade the vehicles worthy to receive a coveted Lake Mirror Swan trophy.








[h=2]Open Car Show[/h] The Open Car Show takes place on the streets of downtown Lakeland starting at 10:00 AM on Saturday. The streets will be closed-off to accommodate nearly 500 special interest and collector cars of all types. Vehicles will be displayed in groups of similar makes and models. Marque specific car clubs are encouraged to attend and efforts are made to reserve space for clubs with 10 or more members in attendance. Street vendors and entertainers add to the festival atmosphere as thousands of appreciative spectators enjoy the vehicles. This group is not judged, but sponsors carefully choose their favorite vehicles to receive a coveted Lake Mirror Classic Ribbon. All vehicles must be pre-registered.














[h=2]Heacock Insurance New Car Show[/h] Remember when unveiling new model cars was a really big deal? Then, the New Car Show presented by Heacock Insurance is just for you. Experience the latest automobile designs and technology from several central Florida auto dealers as they bring their newest vehicles to be unveiled at the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival. The New Car Show will be held on the east side of the Lake Mirror Promenade. If you’re in the market for a new vehicle, you might be able to find it at the Lake Mirror Classic. Dealerships will have staff at the event to answer any questions about the new vehicles. This event will be held in conjunction with the Hot Rod Rendezvous during Friday night.








[h=2]Budweiser Hot Rod Rendezous[/h] Start your engines for the opening event of the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival on Friday night at Lake Mirror Park. The Budweiser Hot Rod Rendevous is an outdoor concert and car show held on the promenade around Lake Mirror. Junior & The MD’s, a perennial favorite of the Lake Mirror Classic, will rock the night with their special blend of classic and rock and roll music. When the band takes a break over 100 hot rods will fire up their engines and make some music of their own.















[h=2]Hemmings Road Tour[/h] The final event of the Lake Mirror Classic is the Sunday morning Road Tour. Registered participants explore central Florida back roads and are challenged to answer questions about landmarks along the route. The route is quite challenging to discover, so be prepared to bring a navigator. The tour is one of the most rewarding events of the Festival. This event is open to all types of vehicles, so you do not need a show quality car to participate. The tour ends at an undisclosed location for brunch and prize giving. Participants must pre-register and provide proof of insurance.









[h=2]Vintage Fashion Show[/h] The Lake Mirror Classic’s Vintage Fashion Show was so popular at last year’s event that it is “back with style” again as part of the Concours d’Elegance activities on Saturday. Participants in period dress will be judged with their vehicle and finalists will be invited to the amphitheater for a Red Carpet award presentation. Come in period dress, or even as your favorite celebrity and compete with others to see how accurate you can be. It’s always a step back in time at the Lake Mirror Classic’s Vintage Fashion Show.

[h=2]Antique Bicycles, Classic Motorcycles and Vintage Wooden Boats[/h] The Lake Mirror Classic includes special display areas for Antique Bicycles, Classic Motorcycles and Vintage Wooden Boats. These special vehicles are displayed at Lake Mirror Park adjacent to the Concours d’Elegance vehicles. The 1920’s-era seawall surrounding Lake Mirror provides a perfect backdrop when the vintage boats take to the water. If you are registering an antique bicycle, classic motorcycle, or wooden boat, please register for the Open Car Show and you will be placed appropriately.








[h=2]Food and Souvenir Vendors[/h] Commercial displays, souvenir vendors and food vendors will be plentiful and add to the festival character of the event. [h=2]Classics for Sale Corral[/h] A special area is set aside for classic cars for sale. This is a great opportunity to locate that classic car of your dreams. You can register vehicles for the Classic Cars For Sale area the morning of the event for $75. Cars for sale are not considered show cars and do not receive an entrant packet or lunch.
