ITB Issues - Lift me up or beat me down
hey all. any of you who head out to qsl on thursdays will know me as the guy with the black s14 kouki on vs-xx's.
I recently acquired a very nice s13 hatch, and as jason can attest, was very adamant about running an n/a ka with itb's. I have collected, or am in the process of collecting, everything mechanical I need to run the setup.
But today, I hit a wall hard (emotionally speaking). The least expensive ems that will run it using the optical distributor signal is gonna run about $800. Add on to that the rest of the stuff I need to get the car running, and you come to rest at about $1k. Then comes the cost of tuning and whatnot.
My questionto you all is should I keep going and finish this project, or should I give up and finish it later when I can build the motor? Or am I going to get flamed, and be told "n/a sucks, buy a turbo"?
Let it begin.

Get a mega squirt ECU.
I have seen guys running pretty decent ITB setups on megasquirt, and they didn't have any problems. It's not expensive, you just have to put it together yourself, and then get it tuned.

I know, but they also deleted a/c b/c they had to move the compressor and had to have a crank trigger made to use the ford edis ignition. Looked at this setup, not what I want to do. but thanks.
honestly man, I would keep going, especially if the only thing you need is an EMS. Building the motor would honestly be up to you. This will be no means be a horsepower producing power plant, but more of a spirited drivers dream. So if you think youll be happy w/ 170-180 whp (just a guess) with sickness throttle response, dont build it. I personally would choose to build it if you are going to put money into EMS and tuning, not to mention, pull as much hp as possible

i think this project may take a back burner til i get more dinero and actually learn to drift.
Heres a decent write on it

I like this one better, you're gonna have to sign up and what not, but it is worth it... i think this guy only spent like 1000 bucks total, and it isn't that bad of a set up.

I've been doing alot of research about ITBs, so if you've got any questions, feel free to hit me up
good luck

trust me, I've been reading those threads, and others, for about 6 weeks. they all used megasquirt which only controls air/fuel. they ran a distributorless ignition system off of a ford escort, called an edis. they needed to use a toothed wheel on the crank to trigger this. they downside is that the a/c compressor must be deleted, or the edis won't be able to mount properly.
I want to retain a/c as this it not yet a track only car. and I wanted to use the stock optical distributor sensor, since it is more accurate (according to at least 2 reliable sources) and more able to be finely tuned. enter the spectre ems pro. the only one under 1k that does both using the sensors I want. that's why I didnt go with megasquirt/edis.
*edit* sorry that came out kinda asshooole-ish. since youve been doin research, we should probably put our heads together and get this figured out. the mechanicals are very simple, the wiring is too, its just the sensors and shit...
